    What is your favorite song?

Mine is - A Good Man - Emerson Drive

I don’t need a whole lot of money
    But I wouldn’t turn a lottery down
I just need a little green in my pocket
So I can buy my buddies a round
All I want is a place to lay my head with the woman I love lyin’ in my bed
    Kind of understated
    My dreams aren’t that complicated…

    I wanna be the one
When all is said and done
Who lived a good life, loved a good wife, and always helped someone in trouble
On the day they lay me down
I want everyone to gather ‘round
And say he was a father, brother, neighbour and a friend
    He was a good man!

I used to dream of being a rock star
And seein’ the world in style
Used to dream of havin’ a fast car
    And driving that miracle mile
But I’ve heard tales those streets aren’t paved in gold
They’re full of pot holes and empty souls
    Who never learn…
Love is something you gotta earn

    I wanna be the one
When all is said and done
Who lived a good life, loved a good wife, and always helped someone in trouble
On the day they lay me down
    Want everyone to gather ‘round
And say he was a father, brother, neighbour and a friend
    He was a good man!

When I’m gone, I wanna leave a legacy
Of love and laughs and honesty behind me
    Behind me…

    I wanna be the one
When all is said and done
Who lived a good life, loved a good wife, and always helped someone in trouble
On the day they lay me down
    Want everyone to gather ‘round
And say he was a father, brother, neighbour and a friend
    He was a good man…

    Yaaaaa…I wanna be a good man…a father, a brother, a neighbour, and a friend
I wanna be a good man!

Awwwww... it changes all the time, I dunno... at the moment I have two.

The Beatles - Taxman (Written by George Harrison)

    One, two, three, four...
    Hrmm!
One, two, (one, two, three, four!)

    Let me tell you how it will be;
There's one for you, nineteen for me.
    'Cause I’m the taxman,
    Yeah, I’m the taxman.

Should five per cent appear too small,
Be thankful I don't take it all.
    'Cause I’m the taxman,
    Yeah, I’m the taxman.

    (if you drive a car, car; - I’ll tax the street;
    (if you try to sit, sit; - I’ll tax your seat;
    (if you get too cold, cold; - I’ll tax the heat;
(if you take a walk, walk; - I'll tax your feet.

    Taxman!

    'Cause I’m the taxman,
    Yeah, I’m the taxman.

Don't ask me what I want it for, (ah-ah, mister Wilson)
If you don't want to pay some more. (ah-ah, mister heath)
    'Cause I’m the taxman,
    Yeah, I’m the taxman.

Now my advice for those who die, (taxman)
Declare the pennies on your eyes. (taxman)
    'Cause I’m the taxman,
    Yeah, I’m the taxman.

And you're working for no one but me.

    Taxman!

Muse - Time is Running Out

    I think I'm drowning
    asphyxiated
    I wanna break this spell
    that you've created

    you're something beautiful
    a contradiction
    I wanna play the game
    I want the friction

you will be the death of me
you will be the death of me

    bury it
I won't let you bury it
I won't let you smother it
I won't let you murder it

    our time is running out
    our time is running out
    you can't push it underground
you can't stop it screaming out

    I wanted freedom
    bound and restricted
I tried to give you up
    but I'm addicted

now that you know I'm trapped sense of elation
    you'd never dream of
    breaking this fixation

you will squeeze the life out of me

    bury it
I won't let you bury it
I won't let you smother it
I won't let you murder it

    our time is running out
    our time is running out
    you can't push it underground
you can't stop it screaming out
how did it come to this?
    ooooohh

you will suck the life out of me

    bury it
I won't let you bury it
I won't let you smother it
I won't let you murder it

    our time is running out
    our time is running out
    you can't push it underground
you can't stop it screaming out
How did it come to this?
    ooooohh

Some of my "all-time" favorite, rather than current favorites (kept to as small a number as possible ):

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - "Walking to Do"
Won't you take me where my feet feel happy in their own time
And the Cathedral of Reason lets the bells chime, and the lightning is fine?
I'm old enough to know that people waiting for some big sign
Should quit their waiting on the Divine. Divine is what's in your mind
I've seen the cruel and hard, and I've seen them hard on you
But I'll buy you brand new shoes if you cross to my side –
there's a whole lot of walking to do

And if we're near or far from out city by the sea-side
Well, as long as we keep our stride, I believe we'll be fine

You've seen the years roll on, and you've seen me roll with you
I see the road is long, so get on my side, there's a whole lot of walking to do

And if we stay on our feet, we'll make it in our own time
And though the road has got some steep climbs, I believe we'll be fine

From your house, to my house, to the Mews –
there's a whole lot of walking to do
Bethnal Green, to the tube – there's a whole lot of walking to do
Aoyama to Shobuya – there's a whole lot of walking to do
Rock Creek Park, to The Ave., and on past the zoo – there's a whole lot of walking
whole lot of walking to do

Well I'm here, I'm here, and you're here, and it's true – there's a whole lot of walking to do
And you're cool, you're cool, and I'm cool, and it's true – there's a whole lot of walking to do
There's no fuss, no fuss! and I trust, I trust you- there's a whole lot of walking to do
And you're strong, I'm strong, and I can be too – there's a whole lot of walking to do
And you do, and I do – there's a whole lot of walking to do
Strike Anywhere - "To the World"
Look how the ruts cling to my footsteps
    the fatal invisible tool
by which we define (we fight!) for our approval
and fear our removal from the safety of fools

From the tidal forces of our positions
not won (not one!) to take for granted
are our rebel hymns in canted
to sing in the mines of the fortunate sons?

Brothers in spirit, sisters in rage,
will we live out our lives in this concrete cage?
another heartbeat lost, another police murder
buried in the public eyes on the back page.
heartbeat lost in a new world order
hobbled and bound but still walking away

I pledge allegiance to the world
nothing more, nothing less than my humanity
I pledge allegiance to the world
    searching for vision not invisibility
I pledge allegiance to the world
    searching for vision not invisibility
I pledge allegiance to the world
until the last lock breaks none of us are free
    none of us are free...

We fight to balance our minds
petty powers pushing profits over our lifetimes
world leaders mortgaging our lives with words
I don't need to be reminded of whom you really serve.

Brothers in spirit, sisters in rage,
will we live out our lives in this concrete cage?
another heartbeat lost, another police murder
buried in the public eyes on the back page.
{Too many} heartbeats lost in the new world order
{while we're} standing alone with our backs to the maze

I pledge allegiance to the world
nothing more, nothing less than my humanity
I pledge allegiance to the world
until the last lock breaks none of us are free
I pledge allegiance to the world
until the last lock breaks none of us are free
I pledge allegiance to the world
    for nothing more, nothing less

    In justice, in hunger united
    searching for vision united
    in justice, in hunger united
law and order {but} for whose order?

I pledge allegiance to the world
nothing more, nothing less than my humanity
I pledge allegiance to the world
until the last lock breaks none of us are free
I pledge allegiance to the world
under no nation will we ever be
I pledge allegiance to the world
    for nothing more, nothing less
than my humanity, than my humanity, than my humanity (pledge allegiance!)
to our humanity, to our humanity, to our humanity (to the world!)
None More Black - "Nods to Nothing"
    Make the killing.
    Wipe the blade
    as it exists
    out my brain.
    Anti-social?
    Middle name.
    Save it.
    So C'mon C'mon!
    Safety first,
    ego last.
    Can't compete with
    half a chance.
    Anti-social?

    C'mon C'mon!
    I must be someone,
cause I think that everyone thinks I'm a bastard
    I think i'll stay home
    and have an episode.
    Why go,
    When i'm safe at home?
    One step closer
    to the door.
    With back to wall, I
    slide to floor.
    All the socials I ignore.
    Wasted.
    So c'mon c'mon!
    Safety first and
    ego last.
    Can't compete with every chance.

Propagandhi - "Rock for Sustainable Capitalism"
I ****in' love that one rock video where
    that ****ing jack-ass mohawked millionaire
prances around by far the worst sausage party on earth,
where by mere chance he's caught on film shaking hands
with an incredibly diverse collection of patriotic skins.
I like the message it sends:
With a Rebel yell, Just Do Exactly What You're Told.
One million douche bags can't be wrong?
"When did punk rock become so safe?"
You'll excuse me if I laugh in your face
    as I itemize your receipts
    and PowerPoint your balance sheets.

I hear this year's Vans Warped Tour is "going green!"
I guess they heard that money grows on trees.
Hope they ship all those ****** bands overseas
    like they did the factories.

Music's power to describe, compel, renew...
It's all a distant second to the offers you can't refuse.
Anyone remember when we used to believe
that music was a sacred place and not some ****ing bank machine?

Not something you just bought and sold?
How could we have been so naive?
Well, I think when all is said and done,
just cause we were young doesn't mean we were wrong.

And I'll rock back and forth
    on this two-bit hobbyhorse
'til she splinters and gives way.
I'll tend the flowers by her grave.
    And whisper her name.

    If anyone out there understands
can I please see a show of hands
just so I know I'm not insane?
Ever get the feeling you've been played?

Well, that's rock for sustainable capitalism and you know,
we may face a scorched and lifeless earth,
but they're accountable to their shareholders first.
    That's how the world works.
Bad Religion - "I Want to Conquer the World"
Hey Brother Christian with your high and mighty errand,
Your actions speak so loud, I can't hear a word you're saying.
Hey Sister Bleeding Heart with all of your compassion,
Your labors soothe the hurt but can't assuage temptation.
Hey man of science with your perfect rules of measure,
Can you improve this place with the data that you gather?
Hey Mother Mercy can your loins bear fruit forever?
Is your fecundity a trammel or a treasure?
And I want to conquer the world,
Give all the idiots a brand new religion,
Put an end to poverty, uncleanliness and toil,
Promote equality in all my decisions
With a quick wink of the eye
And a "God you must be joking!"
Hey Mr. Diplomat with your worldly aspirations,
Did you see the children cry when you left them at the station?
Hey moral soldier you've got righteous proclamation,
And precious tomes to fuel your pulpy conflagrations.
And I want to conquer the world,
Give all the idiots a brand new religion,
Put an end to poverty, uncleanliness and toil,
Promote equality in all of my decisions
I want to conquer the world,
Expose the culprits and feed them to the children,
I'll do away with air pollution and then I'll save the whales,
We'll have peace on earth and global communion.
I want to conquer the world! [x4]

The first is from the musical Les Miserables, a revolutionary song that really does fire the blood; the lyrics don't quite do it justice, but if a production of Les Mis is ever near you, go and see it, I urge you! Without further ado, Do You Hear The People Sing?:
    ENJOLRAS
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
    When tomorrow comes!

    COMBEFERRE
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
    Beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
    Courfeyrac:
    Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free!

    ALL
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
    When tomorrow comes!

    FEUILLY
Will you give all you can give
So that our banner may advance
Some will fall and some will live
Will you stand up and take your chance?
    The blood of the martyrs
Will water the meadows of France!

    ALL
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
    When tomorrow comes!
My second choice (not in order of preference I must add) is a rather different type of music; classic rock, in fact. It is Pink Floyd's eternal song Comfortably Numb; a great piece, with excellent guitar solos from David Gilmour and all-round excellence, which will be eternal; its best rendition being on their live tour P.U.L.S.E (of which I own the DVD), 9 minutes long or thereabouts of excellence. So let's give it up for Comfortably Numb:
    Hello?
    Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
    Is there anyone home?
    Come on, now.
    I hear you're feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain,
Get you on your feet again.
    Relax.
    I need some information first.
    Just the basic facts,
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're sayin'.
    When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I got that feeling once again.
I can't explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am.
    I have become comfortably numb.
    Ok.
    Just a little pinprick.
    There'll be no more ...Aaaaaahhhhh!
But you may feel a little sick.
    Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working. Good.
That'll keep you going for the show.
Come on it's time to go.

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're sayin'.
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
    I have become comfortably numb.

(Italicised lyrics are Waters, normal are Gilmour)
And finally a love song. As a true unromantic, it confuses me why this moves me, but it does and I rather like it; ergo, here we are, with Sting & The Police's Every Breath You Take:
    Every breath you take
    Every move you make
    Every bond you break
    Every step you take
    I'll be watching you

    Every single day
    Every word you say
    Every game you play
    Every night you stay
    I'll be watching you

    Oh, cant you see
    You belong to me
    How my poor heart aches
    With every step you take

    Every move you make
    Every vow you break
    Every smile you fake
    Every claim you stake
    I'll be watching you

Since youve gone I been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face
I look around but its you I cant replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby, baby, please...

    Oh, cant you see
    You belong to me
    How my poor heart aches
    With every breath you take

    Every move you make
    Every vow you break
    Every smile you fake
    Every claim you stake
    I'll be watching you

    Every move you make
    Every step you take
    I'll be watching you

    I'll be watching you
    I'll be watching you
    I'll be watching you
    I'll be watching you...

Hmmm. A very tough question, but if I was to pick one that really always proves a meaningful listen to me, I'd say "Mayonnaise" by the Smashing Pumpkins.
There's so many other songs just as good really though.

    "Mayonaise"

Fool enough to almost be it
Cool enough to not quite see it
    Doomed
Pick your pockets full of sorrow
And run away with me tomorrow
    June

We'll try and ease the pain
But somehow we'll feel the same
    Well, no one knows
    Where our secrets go

I send a heart to all my dearies
When your life is so, so dreary
    Dream
I'm rumored to the straight and narrow
While the harlots of my perils
    Scream

    And I fail
But when I can, I will
    Try to understand
That when I can, I will

Mother weep the years I'm missing
All our time can't be given
    Back
Shut my mouth and strike the demons
That cursed you and your reasons
Out of hand and out of season
Out of love and out of feeling
    So bad

    When I can, I will
    Words defy the plan
    When I can, I will

Fool enough to almost be it
And cool enough to not quite see it
And old enough to always feel this
Always old, I'll always feel this

No more promise no more sorrow
    No longer will I follow
    Can anybody hear me
I just want to be me
    When I can, I will
    Try to understand
That when I can, I will

There are many favorites of mine! Farnan, you have got me listening to that Emerson Drive song, that I would have to say it is now one of my favorites.

But here is one that has been a favorite for years:

    My List - Toby Keith
Under an old brass paperweight is my list of things to do today
Go to the bank and the hardware store, put a new lock on the cellar door
I cross 'em off as I get 'em done but when the sun is set
There's still more than a few things left I haven't got to yet

Go for a walk, say a little prayer
Take a deep breath of mountain air
Put on my glove and play some catch
It's time that I make time for that
Wade the shore and cast a line
Pick up a long lost friend of mine
Sit on the porch and give my girl a kiss
Start livin', that's the next thing on my list

Wouldn't change the course of fate but cuttin' the grass just had to wait
'Cause I've bot more important things like pushin' my kid on the backyard swing
I won't break my back for a million bucks I can't take to my grave
So why put off for tomorrow what I could get done today

Like go for a walk, say a little prayer
Take a deep breath of mountain air
Put on my glove and play some catch
It's time that I make time for that
Wade the shore and cast a line
Pick up a long lost friend of mine
Sit on the porch and give my girl a kiss
Start livin', that's the next thing on my list

Raise a little hell, laugh 'til it hurts
Put an extra five in the plate at church
Call up my folks just to chat
It's time that I make time for that
    Stay up late, then oversleep
Show her what she means to me
Catch up on all the things I've always missed
Just start livin', that's the next thing on my list

    Under an old brass paperweight
Is my list of things to do today

    The best song of 2006...

Gnarls Barkley - Smiley Faces. Maybe not the most popular, but it's just got a damn good baseline...And probably most positive lyrics i ever heard...

    Did you bring a friend
I need to know this cause
    I notice you smiling
Out in the sun, having fun ..
    And feeling free
And I can tell you know
How hard this life can be
But you keep on smiling for me

What went right, what went wrong
Was it a story or was it a song
Was it over night or did it take you long
    Was knowing your weakness what
    Made you strong
Or all the above, oh how I love
    To see you smiling
And oh yeah take a little pain
    Just in case
You need something warm to embrace
To help you put on a smiling face
    Put on a smiling face

Dont you go off into the new day with any doubt
Heres a summary of something that you can smile about
Say for instance my girlfriend she bugs me all the time
But the Irony of it all is that she loves me all the time

I wanna be you whenever I see you smiling
Because its easily one of the hardest things to do
Your worries and fear become your friends
And they end up smiling at you
    Put on a smiling face

and a video so you can get a 'feel' of it!
