Default What do you think about Total War: ATTILA?

    Hey guys,

I have a couple of questions. I haven't bought the game yet, i'm just looking for gameplays and other such things.

My first question is is it that good? - I have heard a lot of guys saying that this game is the best Total War to date because of the many improvements (even if its minor). - It is a bit sad to see more players playing Rome II than ATTILA - according to Steam.

My second Q is how does it run on your computer - compared to Rome II? - Is it better or not. (Because the system requirements are almost the same)

I want to hear your opinions - pros cons.

    Thanks in advance.

I've got to say it's probably the hardest vanilla total war game to date, and probably the best in my opinion. The amount of depth in areas is fantastic, the Ai is formidable and will only improve as it goes on. There are some annoyances like the Nordic units in the Celtic factions but overall it's a vast improvement to rome II.
Performance wise, i'd say it's also great. I've got a gtx g70, i7 870, 8gb ram and i can run on on max everything bar one or two things so anything better than my rig should run it great. So to sum it up i'd say get it if you like the time period and the improvements.

I am one of those guys who did not pre-order it because of Rome II's launch, I vowed that I will never pre-order another game. I waited looked on the forum watched Youtube and then I bought it. So far I am very happy,I prefer the unit cards in Attila, RII unit cards I had a hard time interpreting. Performance wise with PC no different.

It's certainly better than Rome 2, but all things considered Shogun 2 is still the best optimized and balanced TW game. They made some massive improvements to campaign-level play with the family tree and faction management, but battles are still mediocre at best. It needs a few patches to iron out some of the weird balancing decisions.

Performance on my machine (FX-8350, R9 280x, 8gb DDR3) is worse than Rome 2: EE but I can't say I'm surprised since TW games never worked well with AMD stuff without some patches and new drivers. I found a decent middle ground performance-wise, although I'd say right now it looks worse than R2 for me.

e: Concerning difficulty - The more I play the more it seems to me the AI isn't really any smarter than before, it's just omniscient. That's why you get armies that follow you to the ends of the earth like a laser guided missile and why sometimes the AI even manages to ambush you during battles. Not because it planned on doing that, but because it exploits its awareness of whether the player can see it or not, while at the same time knowing exactly where you are.

I've noticed the AI tries to flank much more than in the past and also actively tries to take out any siege equipment you might have (usually with flaming arrows). All in all, Attila is a great game despite not being patched yet. I do not regret my pre-purchase at all, though I did not pre-purchase Rome 2..... I bought it a few months after release during a sale.

I have actually just made a video detailing some of my first impressions of Attila after a week or so of playing, feel free to take a look, I dont expect everyone to agree with what I mention, these are just my opinions on the game as it currently stands.

The campaign ius much better than R2's and has the potential to raise to the same level as RTW or M2TW. There are a few weird things happening on the map, and I sometimes have the feeling my faction has to fight the rest of the world which breaks the fantastic immersion level brought by the return of the family tree and other nice features.

But the battle map is where I'm less convinced. This is much too fast to my tastes. Yet I must say I'm quite impressed by the BAI. It's very good.

One last thing : I'm the only one seing AI levy units fight tillalmost the last man standing ? I saw levy pikemen waiting to be only 10; 15 men in the unit before breaking when half of their army was already destroyed !

I didn't even know it was coming out mostly because I've been playing Guild Wars 2. But the new types of civs(the Hordes) are the new thing, and they're pretty interesting. And what you can apparently do to the map(desolation) can, well, wreck things. I usually only played vanilla TW games unless it was the total conversions, and yes, so far this is the best one I've seen in what I'll call the second generation. There being a hilarious transition period between M2TW and Empire as they were making it, suggesting such a concept. If you look at the release years anyway.

Discussing how "useless" a post is has absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand. Off-Topic posts deleted.

Played a Frankish campagin. Very much enjoyed it though the endgame is pretty much the same as every other total war. You become far too strong, everyone hates you and you end up having to curb stomp every nation one by one. Seeing as i paid £17, im not complaining. It was fun but i don't see myself spending hours and hours on it like the first medieval game or rome 1.

Kinda meh, after playing with few factions, and replaying another few factions. It's such a circle jerk, unbalanced battles and running away from full stacks of enemies. How can I manage to get my army within few turns if I have barrely enough money to upkeep one city? Dafuq... enemy is already at your gates... actually here is screenshot from Normal Danes campaign.

This 4th turn, Geats just attacked me when I left to capture another settlement, and this is happening in every campaign, Ostroghts chased by 4 stacks of ERE + another 2 of WRE attacked me and destroyed my two hordes, tried Saxons rekt by Franks and Alamans within few turns.

Another issues... archers, situation Medium Spear Infantry is charging, shooting... first volley nothing, second.. nothing, switching to flaming arrows... still nothing... okay, heavy shots... no result -_- what is wrong with archers in this game, they can't damage anything but enemy missile unit or very light units. Also Nordic units are crap in general, fighting against any Germanic culture is pain in the arse, they got better infantry at start.

We need this damn delayed patch, come on SEGA/CA stop fooling around. Freezing is annoying, everything else horribly unbalanced. Otherwise good game, enjoying everything, graphics, music and factions is all good.

There are still some issues with the game. However there's still fun to be had.

If I were you, I would wait till it goes on sale.

Definitely is better and after some time it could be another good TWR title, not to be forgotten. ROME II looks like it's poor sibling. However there's still too much left from RM II, which needs to be improved over time. I like a lot and frankly I was surprised. But the best TWR till now? I doubt it. Despite all cons, the game is worth to buy. Let's hope, mods and patches will do more good.

After some initial positive thoughts, I was very very happy.

After playing more than a week or two, less happy when I saw that:

    a) Attila died without once fighting my Western Roman Empire or making any notable effect to the campaign map aside from razing a small part of Eastern Europe

    b) All the factions love razing so much. My campaign is now an empty mess. Apparently all those fires destroyed all the human populations and armies of these regions too because I'm staring at pure emptiness wondering how to have fun when there's no enemy armies around.

    c) Campaign AI is still awful and needs to stop making decisions based on the player's army strength etc. etc and just ATTACK. It's so boring for me having all my amazing cities with armies inside waiting for a good battle, but all the enemies does is wait and do nothing even when it has 5 full strength armies near me. Instead, it will attack a town with no defences. This needs to stop. Stop the pussyfooting around. If the enemy king has 5 stacks, and I have some stacks, let's just fight it out in an epic siege or battle. Don't attack the town that is situated 200 miles east of me on some random assault deep into enemy territory, then split your forces and wonder out into the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Indian and Southern Oceans.

    d) This game is about battle simulation. Why, in a game session of more than ten hours yesterday, during a late WRE campaign, could I only find one or two decent sized battles to fight? If I want detailed campaign play, I'll go play Europe Universalis, this game needs to focus on the epic battles of history.

This is spot on. And I wonder if this is not caused by the improvements in the CAI actually....
I tried to think about that in this thread :

Old AI and an old engine wrapped up in shiny new wrapping paper with some fresh features that would have otherwise been brilliant laid on top.

Total War players praising AI that can't even build empires. How many games do we have to go through to get AI that can offer a challenge in late game and not be supported by gimmicks?
