more than 20 controllable units on field at a time

Hey, I know I saw this at one point or another during my internet searches but for some reason I can't seem to find it now.

How do I have more than 20 units at a time on the battle field that I can actually CONTROL? The AI is too stupid when it has my troops to let them handle my men and I can stand the enemy being allowed 3 full armies on the field and me only 1 with two sitting there waiting to be tagged.

You can't. It might be a good idea to put expendable units in your support army. Preferably units you can't mess up with too much, like spearmen. Cavalry may run into spears/pikes, infantry the AI may be charged by cavalry, archers may cause friendly fire... So spearmen is a safe bet.
