    Default Steam Issues:

I have a question for the community I hope can be answered. I would like to try and fix the Steam\RS2 problem, but I'm worried that if I buy RTW through Steam it would wreck all of my normal (CD) installed copies. Does anyone know if if a Steam version of RTW can run as well as a CD version?

I have some 'suspicions' as to why the Steam RTW has broken RTW\RS2, but I don't want to mess up my installs.

Perhaps you misunderstood.....I want to know if I can run RTW in Steam.....AND run it from a CD installed copy.

Also, are you running RS2 in Steam, because a lot of people are having problems. Have you fixed them. Please share if so.

    I used this way: http://forums.totalwar.com/showthrea...07-2014-update
Everything exactly the same, only with Rome.

Having seen this, I think I understand what was done by Steam to 'break' modfoldered mods. They have set up RTW to 'minimic' the way RomeII uses mods.
You can try what is suggested here that be done for Med2....but also, I think I have a way to fix RS2 so that it will work in Steam with no modifications to any Steam files. You wouldn't be able to play all the individually modfoldered campaigns or the swap factions, but it could be played just like the original RTW....RS2 is in fact, a complete overhaul of RTW anyway. If anyone would like to try thia, let me know by PM'ing me or posting here.

    Hello mate.

Just re-installing Rome & would love to try RS2... would you be so kind as to let me know the secret, please?

    Thanks in advance...

You can, yes. I used "RTW: Antology" to activate in Steam. But there activated only as "Gold Edition".

Well, I'm having no luck with this. I've tried everything I can think of so far to get RS2 working with this Steam version of RTW, but no go. It's something to do with the map, I know that much, but can't find it yet.

Thank you for keeping us posted, mate. Much appreciated.

Bloody computer game developers & their mad monetising schemes. I've got work in a nearby town this week where I know there's a big secondhand computer game shop, I might see if I can pick up a disc copy of RTW Gold for cheap (I refuse to buy by any route which further enriches CA & friends).

I'm quite irritated by this whole issue...and with Steam and CA. Why they had to mess with RTW this way is beyond my ability to explain, unless they wanted to kill off the competition. Apparently, any mod for RTW now has to be FULLY modfoldered with NO files put in the RTW base directory, and none of them changed. This is absolute nonsense, since it's so easy to restore a broken RTW anyway.

I have made multiple attempts to modfolder the RS2 main data folder, and I have made a little progress...as in: at first the loading bar got about a quarter inch and then it crashed when I tried going into a campaign. Then I fixed some stuff and got some other errors, and then fixed that. It loaded about an inch and crashed with no error. (I hate it when it does that!) So I found some other things by looking at RTRVII...which BTW, works in a Steam RTW because it's modfoldered. After finding some more things wrong I thought I had it beat...loaded about 3/4 of the way, and then the $%#@* crashed again!!

    I'll get it though....because now I'm MAD!

Good luck. I've taken precautions and will be able to run RTW indefinitely.

    - Backup disc images that I can mount? Check
    - Multiple copies on disc, and keys too? Double check
    - Clear understanding of memory issues and how to thwart them? Check.

Steam just ****es me off and I only play Empire TW because I bought it in ignorance of what Steam actually does. Then S2 because I thought it "wasn't that bad" at the time. I haven't been tempted again. I've been trying to figure out how to get backup copies of my M2 discs, but so far haven't got very far yet. I also periodically test running TW titles from virtual machines. Right now RTW reigns supreme for being able to run longevity wise, followed closely by M2. When Steam dies all the other titles do too.

Believe it or not I have FINALLY succeeded in modfoldering the RS2 main campaign, and got the map to load properly. Took me a week, but I got it. Unfortunately, the way RS2 was intended to work won't work with Steam any time soon, unless they fix their mess. So, I will have to somehow cobble together a one turn and zero turn version of this so that people can play the 'base' factions that RS2 started with. There will be no Roman rebels or rebellions at all for now, and no swap factions until I fix each individual one so the files can be copied into the RS2\data folder to change how it works.

Since all my help is gone, I'll have to see if I can resort to the good old DOS batch file to see if I can automate this process a bit....in otherwords, you start the batch file, you choose which faction you want to play, and the batch file does the copying for you and then starts Steam. Right now I have RS2 working with Alexander....haven't tried BI or RTW yet, but I don't think it will be an issue.

That's good. Oh, and one more thing - if you just activated your cd key through steam, you would have gotten Rome for free. Well, at least now you have an extra copy to give away.

    Afternoon all,

I am currently playing RS2 (2.6 patch) through steam after a 6 month break and it is working fine. The only issue I have come across was the error 'unable to locate steam' when starting from the launcher, I used the previous fix of copying the 'steam.dll' file from steam folder and pasting into my RS2 folder.

I am not at all versed in computer language but if someone can advise how I can upload my folder so you can look at it I'd be more than happy to! Or if you have questions please let me know (in baby talk please!)

    Cheers

    V

You may have an RTW version that Steam released before. I certainly cannot get the current one to work correctly. I've gotten the campaign to start, but RTW Steam doesn't like the fact that there are new buildings in RS2 and refuses to find them all no matter where I put them. Bummer.
