Note that this is an idea that I have developed, not much more. While it is certainly viable the decision has not been made by me to work on this mod in the future.

In 865 Ad a great heathen army invaded Britain. The largest host that set foot on the island since the days of Rome, led by the sons of the legendary Ragnar Lodbrok. and they have not come for plunder, but for conquest!
Spoiler for quickly made map concept:

Another important thing, the borders and factions on the map do not represent what the final mod hopefully will include. This is becuase I don't yet have a great knowledge of the political situation in Wales, Pictland and the border with Stratchclyde and Northumbria and Ireland. It is also becuase we have no idea what regions would be included and ommited in an Arthurian dlc, and to a lesser extent it might be becuase of gameplay. Please if you can correct anything about the political situation in early 866 AD please do so anyways. Finaly the factions colours are not representing the final either.
Information:
- The mod is set in the early Middle age Brittain, it will be based upon the very likely Arthur dlc Campaign map (if we for some reason don't get that then this won't be made) featuring a detailed map of Brittain.
Nothing written here is certain, it's simply what I'd want to do. Work will begin probably around the time the official mod tools are released. Feel free to add any suggestions, any help is appreciated, even if won't be done in the end.
If you are interested to join then you can add me on Steam (ask here and I'll give the link), I don't need very much help especialy not concernign the Startpos but of course work will be faster if we are several. A researcher would be nice.
In fact I request any one reading here who know about this era too post there suggestions and pictures and maps here,
Features (planned):
- Play as several different cultures with their own units and traits, The bloodthirsty viking Invaders, the many competing Anglo Saxon Kingdoms (Mercia, Wessex, Northumbria), the ancient celtic inhabitants of the land (Caledonians,Irish,Wales and Wales) or as the powerful Frankish Kings across the sea.
-New historicaly based cities and more interesting battle maps.
-More strategic and small scale campaign with many turns per year. Make sure you have Winter Quarters or else your Kingdom may fall.
-Great Challenge, as the Vikings carve out a new Kingdom with limited forces (can't easily recruit new warriors in foreign lands), as the Anglo Saxon Kingdoms drive out the Invaders while keeping the rival petty kingdoms and the Brittons at bay. As the different Brittons, reclaim the Island for your people and as the Frankish King extend the rule of the mighty Frankian Empire as far as the Northern edge of the world.
-Immersive campaign, the limited and more detailed scope along with improved character development.
-Accurate portrayal of Warfare, armies will be very small (a thousand is much) and if you're not the Vikings you will have a hard time fielding large armies in the Winter.
-Play with Historical character like Ragnar Lodbroks sons Ivar the Boneless and Sigurd Snake Eye, King Ælla of Northumbria, Alfred the Great of Wessex and King Charles the Bald of West Francia
- A new social system with buildings and units, read below:
The Gaelic, Brythonic, Pictish, Norse and Saxon social systems were similar, I will represent this in units and buildings. The lowest class, the Ceorls form most units, low and mid (the fyrd) They are recruited from main chain city buildings.
Next class, the Thegns supplied household warriors to the king and Eoldermen, they are given land in exchange for service and are recruited from fedual land buildings. They form the high tier units. You need both low mid and high tier units in your army. Without high tier units the army will be to weak (they will give morale and be the best troops). But Thegns will be limited and can't win a battle alone
final class is the eoldermen (earls/jarls). They were royal viceroys of a shire and gathered troops and taxes. They however were chosen by the king, the office wasn't hereditary. They are represented by provincial governors
The main building of a province represents not only a city but also all the food produced, every region has it's own unique main chaim building line with different amounts of food production (more in the south). So the king dosnt have to build individual farmsteafs in a very unhistorical manner for the realm to be fed. The other building slots represent not space in a city, but the land in the region (shire). Here you can construct three kinds of buildings (varying a bit from culture but very similar):
Royal land: these buildings represent land the king keeps directly for himself, the king gets most of his income other than taxes from here. He may chose to invest in an estate that breeds horses, a plantage and many other things. However the king cannot keep to much land for himself, or the nobles whose land he has taken will grow discontent and revolt. Thus while these buildings give the most income and some bonuses like cheaper cav (from horse estate) it also gives a public order penalty so large that you can't have these be all buildings)
Feadual land: These buildings represent the land given by the king to the Thegns (warriors, household troops). Im exchange for the land they serve him as household troops, the core/elite of the army. Thus these buildings allow recruitment of those units, but only a few. If you want many of those units you need to construct many of these buildings, but they give less income so you have to balance these with royal land buildings. They give no public order penalty as the Thegns stay loyal in exchange for the land.
Church land: these buildings represent the land given to the church. It gives little income (church is exempt from taxes) but gives public order bonuses wich counter those of the royal land (you need them for economy and these buildings neutralise their public order penalty thus). You can chose to help fund churches and cathedrals (more public order), and abbeys and monasteries (increased research rate amongst other things).

According to legend Ragnar was killen by King Aella of Northumbria, in response his sons invaded britain, so no you won't see him. (I just gave the new season of Vikings away most likely) This mod will be a bit legendary based but will strive for accurate factions, units and so on.

I know but it would be quite limited with a total of nine cities. I wont do much work until if a dlc is heavily hinted at but
I have gone through the benefits if making it and that compared with their previous recent dlcs make it very likely.
Re: [Mod] Invasio Britannia (Viking Invasion) Campaign
great idea if the Arthur dlc actually happens I was hoping for a Viking era mod that included the entire world map with vikings raiding europe and the Eastern Roman Empire fighting with the rise of islam
