I understand that Fuedal Knights, Chivilric knights, Mailed knights, ect are just certain classes of rich folk and so therfore many nations had them in their armies but I'm sure each nation had a different name for them?????? It's not nice seeing the same named units throughout most of the factions. Also I'm sure "Spearmen Militia" or "militia archers" were under others names. Making a custom battle with 8 factions and browsing through the lists of the catholic factions and others is just so uniformed and boring apart from the odd unique unit here and there.

That Greek mod for RTW had native names for all the Greek units and that made a refreshing change from "Pikemen" "Royal Pikemen" "Silver Pikemen" and all the other crap names they thoughtlessly slapped on the units.

The units are 'samey' thats why they put 3 aztec units in the 3d previews. What do you expect though? When has CA ever made units any different? I think the quality of the units is quite good despite there not being a lot of different types.

yes they are quality. Infact as far as my historical knowledge goes I don't know what else they could of added. So what if CA have always done it this way? They had a ready made engine and they coulden't even be bothered to breathe some much needed diversity into the clone army unit roosters of most of the factions. All they had to do was name the units to what they are in each country. Not every damm faction calls knights Chivilric Knights, Feudal Knights, ect.

Well I'm liable to get shot down for this but here goes...

I have no issue with the diversity of units in Medieval 2. In fact, I think it is quite good. The number of unique units per faction is certainly much higher than it has ever been before, and I think having certain units the same between factions is a good feature.

First, although it may be true that not all factions had chivalric knights, they certainly did have thier own versions of them. Clearly CA has simply given the "unique" variants to those factions who are historically renowned for using them, or using them in a certain way.

Second, I have learned after a decade of strategy gaming that completely unique unit rosters take a lot of the fun out of the game. By having some common units between factions, comparisons can be made i.e. portugal and spain have similar tech trees, but what is it that sets them apart? After all, we form judgements as much on similarities as we do differences. In fact, you NEED to establish a common feature in anything you want to be able to compare before you can attempt to differenciate.

Basically what I'm trying to say here is that because there are common units stringed between factions throughout the game, the factions actually turn out more "unique" in comparison to one another. It is probably safe to say that CA was very aware of this when they made the game. This is one of many reasons why in my opinion the gameplay of the "vanilla" versions of the TW games have always had superior gameplay.

Medieval warfare, of all eras, was not exactly renowned for its "diverse unit rosters"....

I find a real lack of diveristy between factions espically of the same religion but I think Savage_Rabbit has a point, This era wasn't that diverse, not like Roman era

I've been playing around in custom battles, and I've come to decide that its not actually that the whole game lacks diversity - once you get into the late era, all sorts of new units come up. Not just gunpowder units, but all kinds of stuff. Its rather odd really. lol!

I think it's a LOT better than MTW1. Danes have a much better roster, and so does poland than they did in the original.
