Started my first campaign as the French, and all went well for the first few turns, created a couple of armies took control of two rebewl towns, made many trade agreements and sent out a few merchants.
After about 15 turns or so things started to go wrong. First I had a failed seige on a rebel town to the north (not enough infantry to take the walls). the following turn my other army was sent on a Crusade, which was promtly followed by an attack an victory for Milan over one of my southern towns (not enough infantry to defend the walls).
My crusade army was deserting like rats as I had to send them over land, due to my navy being attacked and sunk by pirates just before the crusaders reached it.
My remaing army was sent south to deal with the Milanese, which left the HRE free to attack and beseige two of my towns, now my income has dropped dramatically, but there is a ray of hope the Pope has excommunicated Milan.
No such luck, within the next few turns my Cardinal is burnt at the stake, the Pope dies, and the new Pope reinstates the Milanese, I'm then given a wrap over the Knuckles for continuing my campaign against the Milanese.
With my reputation tumbling the English then decide to join in the fun and beseige one of my northern towns, Portugal, who now control most of northern Spain are advancing on my southern castle with some nasty looking equipment, and my last army is on it's last legs and needs retraining badly.
Add to this the loss of a few family members through death on the battlefield and at the hands of the inquisition things aren't looking so good for me at the moment.
But I haven't had this much fun since STW and possibly MTW. God bored of RTW quite quickly. Looks like I'm going to need a refresher course on Total War.
Couple of other points I'd like to make about the game. Unit movement is slightly too fast but not as bad as RTW, knights charging and then stopping before engaging in melee combat does happen - but this is due to them not being positioned right or gaining enough momentum for a full charge (but when they do itcan be devastating). a single click against an opponent is al that's required as the will build up to a charge themselves, the same with infantry, double clicking is really only needed to move troops around faster.
The game looks beautiful, and watching your units appearance change as you upgrade their armour gives a sense of satisfaction that you are equiping them better.
So far the battle AI seems competent and I have been enjoying them. As mentioned before you lose a lot more men than in RTW, armies need reinforcements and retraining in order to keep them campaigning.
My thanks if you have taken the time to read all of this.
P.S. the game was on sale early in the UK, I got it on the 9th, they guy behind the counter said that another store had started selling all of Fridays releases a day earlier.
