    Default What determines unit heaviness?

I've been wondering about this for some time, particularly because some of the unit classifications seem to be completely arbitrary. For instance, Dacian Armed Townsfolk (basically poorly armed rabble without any armor whatsoever) is presently classed as "Very Heavy Melee Infantry" by the game. Also, some units are classed as heavy spear infantry by the game but then are stated to be medium spear infantry in the unit description text.

I don't get this either epically for Calvary like the Socii Equites unit that has 65 armor and is classified as light Cav while the Ligurian Cav are classified as medium Cav and only have 21 armor I just don't get that.

It does not matter for unit performance. I even haven't assigned a single heaviness class so far.

In that case, we should probably just change some of them to make more sense, so it's easier to tell from a glance the kind of units you're up against.

Oh, so they're set manually by the developers / modders then (as opposed to being classed automatically by the game by the unit's stats). And yeah, I agree with Augustusng ... it would be good if the unit classes could be changed to be more in line with what kind of performance the player can expect from a particular unit.

There is no effect on speed? I understood the one advantage of light and medium cav and inf was their speed and maneuverability?

Nope, battle entities define it are those are separate values from unit heaviness.

This actually has an effect on formations. The polybian era forces if you do half socii, half roman troops. Leads to the socii principes being in the front row with roman hastate, and the socii hastatii being in the second line with the roman principes.

In general AI start setup is all messed up, for example AI pikes are always deployed in the rear instead of the front.

I'll post it in the unit inconsistency thread too, but you guys can manually set what a unit is as far as weight class, can't you?

We can, but it must be done manually for all units.
