generals and schools, traits etc

Is there a guide for how long I need to keep my general at school for.
Right now im at understanding mathematics, but understanding the whole roleplaying aspect of generals would be great.
So if any one can help me or point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

1. Before age 28. Preferably an intelligent character.
2. Not yet "unschooled".
3. Stay in a city with a school until trait Erudite is earned.
4. Go to academy to learn there, get traits and ancillaries that academies give.
5. I'd suggest building academies in cities with mines, roads and a temple of "forge" line as these buildings take part in education as well.
