    Default The Mongols

Well, my campaign was ticking over nicely. Antioch was mine, and i was sending an army on a crusade to jerusalem. Then the mongols invade. There are about 6 or 7 full stacks of them, with high star generals. They have some artillery, but are for the most part just cavalry. Its awful. The holy lands have become an utter nightmare.

Anyone got to this point yet? Im planning on just grinding casualties out of them to prevent them spreading too far across for the west. Guess its just going to be man the barricades and take as many of them with you as you can.

    Anyone got a better suggestion?

Ah yes, the Mongols. I have many fond memories of them from my Turkish campaign in Medieval I. Greatest challenge ever, and the eventual victory just felt so good.

    Good luck defeating them...

Which faction do you play? I would suggest a tactical retreat, let your cities rebel and gather all your farces together. Then, you can hit the Mongols.

lol! im glad to see them as a great threat in this version too! Fortify the mountain passes w/ non-mounted archers and some good spear units? i would think, that if they dont starve your forts out that this would work very well. when i say fortify the mountain passes, i mean try to prevent them from passing through the caucus region and or armenia. wish i had it right now, just a few more hours left!

Edit: just notice you said crusading , fortify the the levant then? only suggestion i can give then

Glad to see CA has taken some historical accuracies into account (Mongals does have siege equipments with them when they invade)...looks like the 'holy land' will become 'playground of destruction' at that point lol

A fortune teller once told Jack Bauer the following: "In the century 21st, you will be the savior of the world... seven seasons in a row." Moments later, Jack Bauer shot him in the kneecaps, and yelled "WHO ARE YOU WORKING FOR?!"

Playing as england at the moment. Im only in the holy lands due to crusading. Unfortunately, they are already surrounding antioch, which is why i think i will have to grind them down.

Maybe you should just send your troops home.

the best advice i can give you is retreat, stay away from the mongol as much as you can, battling them will be a pain on the butt, even if you won, your army will be severly weaken, if you stay the hell out of their way, you can save up your army, and by the time they leave, i bet most of the land they pass are so weaken, and only need to get there to conquer them. the mongol can only get as far as asia minor, and as far as hungary, thats in history but don't know about the game,

mongol's rock. Killed them as russia in MTWI by leaving only one person in Khazar and so they had a small army. Then I just moved all my units into there as a defensive army (added two stars to my king) and I killed more than half their army in that battle. Oh but it was so fun.

I'd suggest just moving out of the area as well.

Tons of missile troops should counter their mounted archers.

Im currently on turn 88, but i would guess around turn 50 or so. They actually came right up to antioc around 10 or 12 turns ago, so around 66 turns in. The turks are untouched so far as i can see. The mongols entered the game close to baghdad i recall, and have headed towards me, although i would assume that the turks are next. I pray the byzantines can crush them.

Unfortunately, they boxed my brand new faction leader into antioc in two turns as i was trying to reinforce. Ive now lost two armies, one of which was inteded for a crusade on jerusalem, except poland got there first. Im about to loose my foothold in the holy lands, but im going to concentrate on europe now.

France will be destroyed in approx. two turns. Portugal will follow, and then the HRE. Hungary and Poland are currently strong allies, as are spain. They will remain in place until milan and venice are mine, sicily to follow. Its a wonderful world!

The mongols are almost exclusively missile troops in one way or another, and around 65-75% mounted. They are extrmely annoying to meet in the field, and sport enough equipemnt and firepower to make seiges a headache. Plus three full stacks bearing down on you at once in a battle makes life complicated.

Anyone else suffered at their hands yet?

They arrive more like turn 65 than 50, and BTW there was one easy way to completely shatter the Mongols in MTW1. Stop them at bridges. Almost all cavalery armies running into walls upon walls of spears equals, lots of dead mongols.

I'm glad the Mongols sound like they are a challenge.

I can't wait for the Mongol/Timurid invasions when I pick up the game.

Same here. Considering the fact that they conquered more land than any other force in history and controlled most all of Eastern Europe for at least a century, it's good to know that it's completely impossible to fight them without getting hurt a reasonable amount.

yes a tactical retreat would have been best. geuss its to late though. if you wouldve retreated to a nearby island or so and waited for them to battle with other factions and grind it out, then you could come back and crush them.

If the mongols are mostly cavalry wouldn't it be easier to fight them in defensive battles? Eg. Bridges and cities or in high hills and mountains?

It would be suicide to fight them on open field (I'm assuming they mostly have mounted archers and with the improved AI they'll most definetly harrass you like there's no tomorrow.).

Even with the mongol's siege equipment if you got a good number of archers and spearmen I'm pretty sure they can hold better within the city since in sieges you need a decent size of infantry to get the job down. At least that's how I did it in BI.
