Icon5 Why does AI only attack cities from 1 side ?

    Hi .

I don't know whether you have this problem or don't .

But the AI in Rome II puts all it's army in 1 front and attack from there which simply makes most battles the same .

Is it possible to work on the AI in order to divide it's forces and attack from different sides ( especially when attacking cities ) ?

In shogun 2 the AI usually did that and defender had to divide his forces in different sides but I've barely seen this in Rome II !!!

It's not possible to mod the AI, unfortunately.

Just the other day I was playing a Junii campaign, VH/VH and the Veneti conquered Dalmatia. They had an army in Patavium and another across the Adriatic, and they attacked Ariminum with both on the same turn. The armies came from 2 o'clock and 6 o'clock, so I think this is pretty well covered. I held the harbour with my 2 ships, 2 swordsmen, and 3 javelinmen. I held the other end of the town with my town guard while my own army reinforced from 9 o'clock. That's about as good as it gets without playing against a human, and armies can't divide on the march. Point is, they already do attack from different directions. It just doesn't happen every time, which is only natural.

I find with two armies it is quite rare when they don't attack from opposite areas, throw in an enemy fleet and the pause button gets hammered!

It's so sad that the AI is both terrible, and unchanging. Not only can it never be creative, it makes terrible choices. My biggest qualm lately is when a unit routs at the top of their ladder... Rather than go BACK DOWN THE LADDER, they rout THROUGH MY TROOPS.

"The enemy is too much for us! Let's run through their swords, down the stairs in that tower, and out the main gate! That way we're sure to shatter and not be able to reform!"

    Idiots.

Quite frequently I see the AI divided and attack from two or three sides at the start of a siege...

Not only do multiple armies attack from different locations, I've even had a single army attack from two fronts before. That said, it's rare, and usually happens in minor settlements rather than sieges against walled settlements.

I can report that I've also seen cases of an individual army splitting up to attack two gates during the set up phase.

    It's not common however.

Two armies will almost always attack two different gates unless they approach along damn near the exact same campaign map axis.

Same as Zombieflanders says, in minor settlements I will often see the ai approach through multiple points, especially if it can find a less guarded one.

well my point was 1 army not 2 or 3 .

In shogun 2 it was a challenge to put your forces in right front as the AI always divided it's forces and you didn't know unless you started the battle but Rome II is terrible . The AI puts all it's forces in 1 place while it could attack from 3-4 fronts at the same time to defeat defender before reorganizing .

I just don't get what has happened to totalwar and the AI , it should get better as the time goes but ... .

CA might start with fixing the AI's armies incapacity to use 2 rams in a battle, oh well maybe that's too much to ask for? There are a lot of things that simply don't work with siege battles;I guess CA is hoping we forget about it until Attila's release. Don't they care for they sake of polish that Tortoises can't even be used by the AI? They build them pointlessly to stand in indolence on the battlefield. These are different than your standard bugs in video games, these are just broken things.
