    Default Campaign DLC Setting Ideas

Not that we need a campaign DLC right away but I've been reading the latest book on the Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell and they provide the perfect settings for a campaign DLC for Attila.

For those of you who don't know about the series, it's set at the time of Danish invasion of Britain, Saxon struggle to push back and at the dawn of creation of Englaland. It's a setting that captures the darker imagery of Attila in my opinion. From the series' perspective, important leaders like Alfred the Great from Wessex and construction of burhs accross Britain is key in pushing back the Danes. There is the concept of ealdormen and their household troops making the Saxon armies. From the Dane's side, reputation is key in creating an army. It's Britain-centric setting which can perhaps include places like Ireland and Frisia. The main story revolves around Wessex, Mercia, and East Anglia but also includes Scotland, Northumbria and Wales.

What other settings do you see in relation to Attila that would be nice to have as a campaign DLC?

I would go for a Justinian Reconquista , Rise of Islam, Charlemagne, or Roman recovery (9 to 11 centuries) dlc

I have nothing to offer creatively, but I think your idea might be a little out of the period, Attila the Hun is 5th century CE while Danish invasion is 11th Century CE.

Danish incursion to the island actually started as early as late 8th century. Major campaigns of Danes, however, started around mid 9th century and the Saxon Stories start around 875.

Keep in mind while Rome II main campaign starts at 272 BC, Wrath of Sparta campaign starts at 432 BC. I believe as long as the theme lines up nicely with the original setting it's not that far off.

My idea for campaign DLC is to release them in a pack like Medieval 2 Kingdoms.

Unlike the Saxon tales, Bernard Cornwell actually has a series of books that deal with this particular time period: his Warlord or Arthur Chronicles which are his version of the Arthurian legend. It consisted of three books: The Winter King, Enemy of God, and Excalibur. All set in 5th century Britain centering around Arthur and his Romano-Britons' attempts to resist the Saxon invasions.

Like all of Cornwell's books, the Warlord Chronicles are just Sharpe in a different costume and setting. Lots of detailed gory battle scenes. Lots of betrayals, intrigues, and Snidely Whiplash-esque villains. And a "flawed" protagonist who is a super-awesome, He-Man, fighting machine but also able to bed every good looking women who simply glances at him. (Derfel, Sharpe, Uhtred? They're almost the exact same character!)

I thought of them but I read them long time ago and felt that their story line was too too narrow. However, those 3 books sort of mirror the Saxon Stories as well with Saxons taking the places of Danes.

I would guess Arthurian Britain, maybe era of Julian, or something about Constantine.

I am, at this moment, re-reading Julian by Gore Vidal. I'd love to see a campaign pitting the West and Julian against the East and Constantius, although it may be too limited in scope.
Your reality sir, is lies and balderdash, and I'm happy to say that I have no grasp of it whatsoever!

    My top choices would be:
    1. King Arthur
    2. Charlemagne
    3. Justinian
    4. Viking Invasion II

476AD Julius Nepos or Syagrius will save the day (read my average AAR or wait for my history writing about this period around next week)

    North-Gallia
    Illyria
and what is now Algeria can be Roman factions

Rise of Islam and Justinian are also good

In the east you have the Hepthalite empire or the white Huns

Any DLC will likely be an enlarged area of the main campaign map. I am going with the saxons. Hopefully they make Britain large with hundreds of regions with Ireland and Scotland too.

    Anglo Saxon Invasion with Arthur
Carolus Magnus, this would be quite large as it would also mean the Ummayads and other new.
    Conquests of Justinianus

Ofcourse I would prefer to see the last two as mods, adn the first one aswell but we cant becuase we would need a Brittania map.

Nice ideas, but from all these suggestions, only an Arthurian DLC seems possible. Arthur is very popular, many factions can be added, from the Viking forefathers to the various Celtic factions and I bet that the three celtic factions of the GC will become playable. The fact that no celtic faction is playable makes me sure that they were cut out for an upcoming DLC. The Caliphate or Justinian are definitely interesting campaigns, but not ppular enough, imo.

I'm almost certain we get a Arthur dlc, but. I think a Charlemagne one is possible aswell.
I only want an Arthur one and an eastern one for the maps

I would love Charlemagne and Arthur based DLCs. I can also easily see DLCs based on the reigns/rise of Justinian and Constantine. They would all be fairly enjoyable to play.

If you haven't seen it, check out The Last Kingdom mod for M2TW (named after the first book I'm guessing). It's not based on the books, but starts in 865 and includes Britain, Ireland, Iceland, Norway, Denmark and the north of France. It's really well made.

Also, considering that a lot of the Saxon and Scandanavian units in ATW seem closer to the 9th century than the 5th, they're better off making this than a Saxon invasion DLC.
