From what I understand Campaign and Battle difficulty gives the AI bonuses depending on how high it is.

I want the AI to be very smart without getting bonuses of any kind.

No full stacks of starting troops, no bonus money, no bonus morale, etc.

The bonus starting troops annoy me the most.

Well then your life would be way too easy. The AI needs some boni just to be able to compete with the human player.

There are limitations in the game for programming an AI. Basically, you can't get the AI "very smart". I tried it myself in SSHIP, and I think I got a reasonably good AI, but in no way it's perfect. Simply because you lack options and variables.

No full stacks of starting troops, no bonus money, but there will still be bonus moral for the BAI I think... not sure if it's possible to mod that out. Plus there's a whole bunch of other features like the supply and command traits, and a personal wealth system that make BGRV one of the most challenging and realistic mods out there. I've also heard that Deus Lo Vult is challenging as well, but I haven't tried that one yet.

If you put the difficulty settings to medium I believe the AI will have no bonuses. At least that's how it was in vanilla, I'm not sure if SS changed that.
