Default PASRCM ( People Against Self Rotating Campaign Maps)

Are you, like me, hankering for the good old days of a stable campaign map that looked like a MAP rather than google earth and remained with north being up and south being down rather than the intoxicated vertiginous "map" we've had to endure in S2TW and R2TW? If so perhaps you could add your support .....

    So

    Dear CA,

please STOP the self rotating campaign maps !!! Or at least enable and option to do so. Ever since it was introduced in Shogun 2 it has detracted from campaign game play by creating disorientation, confusion and vertigo ! Many have gone back to Napoleon and M2TW to avoid it. I appreciate rotation has some value in enabling movement of units hidden behind other units or terrain features but really that is all. Manual rotation would enable this quite nicely.

    Thanks.

( This feature would certainly sway some in favor for paying up for Attila )

I really hate when the camera rotates on the campaign map. You should post this on the official forum too.

i dont mind the rotation but i support the idea of an option to enable and disable map rotation

What ? The map only rotates when you use the rotate map key. If you don't want it then don't use it.

That's weird, my campaign map never rotates except when zooming in for a battle, in which case you can't click anything outside the battle options so it doesn't matter. If you resolve, fight or withdraw from the battle, it returns to the normal North-facing camera view. The only way the campaign map view might rotate is if I manually rotate it myself. So I have no idea why one would be against this.

FYI, in co-op campaign after your friend fights a battle, 90% of the time you end up in a random rotation. Every turn I have to start by manually fixing the camera angle back to north=up, and it's really annoying.

A button to lock the camera to north=up would be very nice.

If 'manually' fixing the camera by clicking the 'Home' key is too difficult for you I would suggest to forget Total War and go play Farmville. Honest advice.

    Hmmm. Strange request.

I liked the fact that I could rotate the map in S2, in reality, I might want to do exactly that to get a better judgement of the terrain layout, etc. The only time I remember it rotating by itself is when it zooms to a pre-battle sometimes. I could never see where a retreating enemy ship went. That I do find irritating. That said, it would rotate back to it former position.

But no, I`m fine with the Campaign map in S2. As for R2, I never got round to even trying rotating in that and never noticed it self-rotating.

p.s. I do wish the maps were more like realistic maps than google earth, I agree there. Shogun 2 has it almost perfect when it starts with a paper like map. I would`ve loved it if it stayed that way. I know Skyrim had mods that changed their maps to all realistic parchment, but I`ll bet you still can`t mod Shogun or R2 to do that!

You know you can rotate maps in real life right?

And while you are at it. Give us back the 2D sprites for the battles!
And remove the zoom! The camera always changes its position, when I use my mouse wheel.

No seriously...is this thread a serious suggestion? If that is the case just don't hit the rotation keys.

I really liked the old school maps - which were obviously meant to be just that - a map - not a gamey arcade 3d "google earth". I loved been able to scroll to the edge of the map and seeing the wooden table underneath it - you really felt like a general in a tent with the map spread out over the table with your officers around....immersion...

It changed with Rome 1 actually when they went to a 3d map.

So the map looking like google earth, in other words "real" and being able to rotate to see more detail, again making it seem more real, is LESS immersive for you?

    That makes no sense man.

Because generals had google earth on their 21st century tablets? No. They did have maps. My point is that with current computers/performance requirements they're never going to get the campaign map to look really realistic (without melting peoples CPUs) but the strategic map look I think is more immersive because its not supposed to look like a game version of a the real world - with oversized giant people representing armies moving around etc - but marks on a map representing armies instead etc I think look better. Personal opinion I suppose like so many things.

I like rotating campaign maps, it's great ! With good ambient sounds it makes it more lively. I would even like the camera to be more parallel to the ground so you can actually feel immersed in the map's relief.

This probably wasn´t intended to be 100% serious but since when is a rotating 3D map "gamey and arcadey"? Please, let´s be a bit more serious about the "arcadey" defamation, else it looses any value it has.

As to the topic at hand, I am against it. A rotating map gives the player a better view over the campaign map, thus allowing him to make more informed choices. Locking the map into a Nort-South direction would be a big step backwards.

Well, generals didn´t have google earth, they did however have the opportunity to actually move around on the terrain, and see all sides of a hill or mountain, not just one side... Options, I say.

I don't think you really understand how maps work. It's a piece of parchment, you can turn it, you can walk around it. It has no fixed angle.
