Ambushes work!!!!

So I am playing as HRE and I am at war with Milan. I decide to try to take one of their cities and I get ambushed while moving my army.

I am of course waiting for a pitched battle where (same as in RTW) I can set my army up and wait.
The battle begins and all I see is my Generals unit now I am scratching my head where is my army I look at the unit cards and see that almost half of my army is already engaded in battle so I move the camera around and see that my army is in marching formation (one long line). Before I get my bearings straight my units start to rout and the battle is over fairly quick.

I could not stop smiling it was great proper ambushes I love this game!!!!!!!!

This is going to be awsome when they finish the Ortus Romani mod for M2TW. Germans and Gauls will actually be able to use those forests to full affect.

Ask most people here, you'll find you're quite lucky. I've NEVER seen a successful ambush by the AI. Most people have seen only a few.

In RTW it did not happen to me even once, If I was ambushed, my army was never ambushed when it was in a line. And I played RTW very much, with a lot of factions and on very hard. Even the patches did not fix this.

yes in RTW, very rarely would the ambush actually end up with you running into them still marching.

For the record, ambushes did work in R:TW and in pretty much the same way just described. (long line, attacked from the flanks)

However, there was always (and probably still is) a possibility that the ambush is considered to have 'failed' and you end up with the opportunity to deploy as usual. Of course, it can be argued that this happened far too frequently, (I only experienced 3 successful ambushes the entire 2 years I've been playing R:TW) but ambushes are certainly not a new feature of M2:TW.

As mirage41, I never had any succesful AI-maded ambush in RTW, I'm happy that in M2TW we can have succesful ambushes maded by AI

And I have never come close to having anything like a real ambush pulled on me in RTW.

Maybe it is because I only played on Mods rather than vanilla RTW, at least once SPQR 2.0 came out... but I only 1 time in wayyy to much time ever playing RTW had a true ambush.

You guys with your experiences of having them all the time... well I didnt have that, and according to my wife I definitely played obsessively since RTW came out...

Same, played the game for two years like mad. Can only say I got into maybe, 3 ambushes? One ambush I created, and two by the AI.

The first time I got ambushed was when I was relocated onagers from one settlement to another without an escort. Gauls sprung up from a forest and annihilated my onagers. They were in the line formation and didn't stand a chance. Second time I was ambushed was with an army with a full stack. If anything, I found that the AI routed quicker when they ambushed me! When I ambushed, I often found my own archers hitting my melee units on the other side and I had to keep my artillery from firing. Although it was an easy victory, I would have suffered less casualties if my missile and artillery were allowed to pick them off first.

In chivalry total war which I've only played for a month, I got ambushed successfully three times, and completely routed. Once against the HRE, once against the Scots, and once against the Vikings.
