Empire Maintenance is super high

It is like +90% (playing as Rome) and I have a lot of provinces but most of them give me 0 money, even though the taxes are on.
Can there be a submod for this please? It ruïns my economy and prevents me form expanding.

Check out the submod forum for any or make a request.
But have you tried researching techs that reduce it, upgrade governors and generals to reduce it. There are also buildings that help reduce empire mainenance.

I can only research 1 more thing that reduces it. But it takes like more than 20 turns so... :p
The thing is I'm currently at war with all of Iberia and so I need my armies, I need to start converting the provinces, keep the public order in check etc... I had around 100000+ in the bank when I started that war now I have almost nothing left and almost no income.

Lucky you :p It went like 5% up when I conquered 1 settlement in Iberia. It's a big problem for me as I have built a huge empire. I have to admit I didn't really try to manage it in the beginning but now I'm doing everything I can to reduce it.

Just take a look. I have 1 province that gives me 14 and that's it.

That's actually the worst state I have seen Italia in as ever. At this point you should have Tier-4 buildings as well as a specialisation in Italia (industry, agriculture, commerce or culture) , which give much higher base values for each settlement.

Actually, I believe it is almost impossible to get it as bad as this at 215BC. Sorry mate, you get an F- in economy-management.


Are you sure you don't have any other submods active though?

Well I'm not really good I know :p Well every building was upgraded to the highest I could at that moment. I wasn't researching the buildings as all my research was for that last one which gives -8% empire maintenance.

That explains everything, pretty much most of your maintenance is from buildings That might mean that EACH region you own gives you pretty much 1% more maintenance, so ich province has 3-4 regions, they it gives you 3-4% more maintenance. So if you upgraded 10 provinces up to max level, they will give your around 30-40% more empire maintenance

I buff me governors with empire maintenance, but not always this is my first pick when I level them up. Second thing is of course tech, but like you I still need to do the last one.

Now I have a lot of emp maintennace reduced by generals who act as governors. To avoid PO hit from armies in cities, I just put general with his bodyguard in a city to level him up.

Also, I avoid building to much building that increase emp maintenance, for example I have only single barrack in Rome and that is all, rest are aux barracks.

Then disband some units Full 20 unit army is propably costing your around 5000 denari per turn.

Actually I think this is a problem. Not that you cant manage it, but it cant be the only thing dignitaries and generals in garrision are for. I am currently 300 turns in, Empire Level 6, all anti-maintenace techs, 2 of my 12 generals als gouvenors + 2 admirals in port, all my dignitaries and gouvernors have some anti-maintenance skills and my empire maintenance is 59 % (at empire level 6!). I understand that I can just spam admirals in ports, train them, and send them to rome as statesmen, but I dont want to manage 30+ statesman and at least occasionly I like to use my extra generals and digninaries for something else. Now I am still making money if I put the tax rate at the lowest, but only because I have a pretty optimized economy and are heavily relaying on slavery (oh boy, didnt think I ever write something like this ), but I can see this getting harder and harder. It should be hard, but this is coming down on the unbalanced side.

By the way I even garrison most of my 10 armies most of the time (and take the PO hit/which I think is a fair idea) and those generals also have anti-maintenace skills. I usually give them combat skills only if earned in battle and public skills for just sitting in garrision

Maybe a solution. Just increase the anti-maintenace skills of dignitaries a little. This way the effect cant be spamed, and no cheesy admiral administration.

Is that mod savegame compatible? I mean I'm not a Total War master or anything :p I like some challenge but this maintenance is not really easy to manage. I've been able to crank my income up from 1000 to 11000 but at the cost of 2 armies that I actually really needed and public order by increasing the taxes. The reason I like DEI is because it's slow, you can take your time to expand and you have to prepare for war but the maintenance is a bit hard, still 91% now.
