High Pitched Noise Emiting From Speakers

Whilst browsing the web and listening to some music I suddenly heard a high pitched mono-toned sound (like the "ringing" you hear in your ears after being in a loud place), at first I thought it was the alarm from the motherboard warning that my CPU was overheating, but when i turned the speakers down to quieten the music and hear the sound better it quietened too. So what is this sound that has suddenly come from my speakers? And the ultimate question: how do I stop it?

I doubt it has much to do with the sound drivers. This PC which Ive had for two years uses onboard sound and I believe theres only 1 set of drivers for it. This is the first time ive encountered a sound problem.

Try a different set of speaks as the problem occurs. If the sound follows the speaker, then it is the computer, if not, chuck your old speakers and use the new.

Strange but that sound has just gone. I didnt do anything, it just faded away. Still would be useful to know what could of caused it as it will probaly come back.

If the noise comes back I will try your suggestion, Alfonso, cheers.

Twist the audio cable from the back of the speaker input to see if you hear any sounds coming from the speakers.
