    Default Naval battles

What do we know about naval battles?

I am mainly worried about a specific thing: In Rome 2, when two ships boarded an enemy one and it was 2vs1, it was all finished. In that situation you couldn't order additional boarding. It couldn't be 3vs1 or 3vs2, only 2vs1 ships maximum, which was an unnecessary limitation IMO.

Do we know if that has changed? If we can have a chain of many boardings?

Rome 2 naval battles are deeply flawed. They should return to Shogun 2's system where boarding was always 1 vs. 1.

Historically, there was of course no limitation and naval battles were not very different from a small land battles on a floating platform. But I doubt CA would be able to simulate something like this.

And yet...they could do so much better. so easily. Start with disabling ships by raking oars and allowing for the capture of ships.

If they could not even get ramming right, how could you expect a much trickier maneuver such as oar raking?

Who said that oar raking is easy to make? You have to have following things:
    - A health system for oars on both sides
    - A mechanics that links oar's health with ship speed
    - And most important, a way a make oar raking not overpowered. If each time two ships smash at each other, all oars are disabled, then the battle would be very quick and annoying. AI should know when the dander comes and retrieve his oars in time. On the other hand, an AI too good at this would make oar raking next to useless.

1vs1 boarding is much more straightforward and less prone to error. If we couldn't have the whole thing, let's better be satisfied with a limited but working version of naval warfare.

I'd love to hear from CA on this. I don't think they ever tried to model raking oars. I think they saw ramming and never looked back because it was "explosive." Plus, I don't believe that they find their ramming system flawed in any way.

From what I've seen fire looks to be a more important factor. That's good.

3 factors could improve naval battles

    1. return the empire wind system(row harder down wind etc)

    2. Have dynamic weather on naval maps and bigger waves(will change tactics)

    3. Breakable oars and killing men will reduce ships speed abilty.

So simple and possible, if you try.

Common sense would have dictated all this from the start. And short of that, we've been suggesting these to CA since Rome2 was revealed as the unfinished bit it turned out to be on delivery, yet still nothing. Add to this captureable ships and monetary gains for cargoes taken, along with eliminating magic transports and the naval game might have been the best part. Instead it's one of the most embarrassing.

The only thing we know as far is that naval battles are more focused on boarding than ship's ramming.

    Interesting (good and bad) features:
    -sails are flammable
-oars splash when they hit the water every time
    -lots of boarding
    -douse fire ability
    -replenish ammo ability
    -artillery ships are very accurate
    -ships submerge quickly when sunk
-the effects of wind on sailing is hard to see, or nonexistent

the truth is obnoxious, getting money is a good idea from battles, it's like getting the armies or navies booty.

Was I right in hearing Darren say that CA has entirely removed naval combat units from Attila? In other words, there are only transport ships and what you see is a transport ship battle????

Nope, watch the other naval videos, the ships are different sizes and have ship names.
