    Default Claim the Purple

Remember back on ETW when your empire would break out in rebellion and you would have the option to either defend the crown or join the rebels in their hope of overthrowing monarchical tyranny? It was a big gamble to join the rebels because you'd be reduced to only that army and if you lost the battle then your campaign ended. It's something that I found to be really fun and immersive for the campaign.

Would be pretty cool if Attila got such a feature. Let's say that the Army of the Rhine gets sick of the emperor in Rome and rises up and you get the option to either fight the rebels or to claim the purple. If you choose the path of joining the rebels then you'd become a splinter Roman faction and get the chance to take the empire. If you fail then game over.

Wouldn't that just be great? I'd love to hear what you guys think and how it could possibly be implemented.

It would be a little bit problematic that members of other families do not have child or relatives. If you take one over, you will end up with an empty family tree. A possible solution is that the game automatically adds members to your familiy with completely random age and traits. Your collaborators (generals and statemen who join the rebellion) would end up in the new "other families".

Another point is that rebellion was never about an army conquering the whole nation. It was about eliminating existing ruler to steal the claim. In other words, rebellion should end if one side lost its leaders and all of his heirs. This in turn requires an AI which appreciate the life of its generals, which we simply don't have.

that actually sounds really cool. as it is right now in the civil war mechanic we are always the "Defender" but it would be fun to play as the instigator too. maybe make it a possibility if your % gets too low.

This could be good if you wanted to play as one of the emergent successor kingdoms (Egypt, Macedonia, etc.).

I think the civil war and politicking in Rome 2 was really let down by the fact that I was in charge from the start. Claiming the title of emperor just didn't feel very rewarding when everyone in the republic took all their orders from me anyway. Empire had a much more interesting system because the form of government you had could drastically affect your gameplay, giving you a real vested interest in picking a side. In Rome 2 the civil war always felt to me more like a 'lets slow down your steamroller mid game' mechanic rather than something that changed the nature of my empire. If I'd only been able to control building in settlements where one of my family members were governing or something then I'd have been really hungry for that crown.

A civil war mechanic such as you suggest could be really neat if it was implemented to have similarly far reaching effects like limiting your control until you can take the empire, or changing your culture or religion or something.
