they are useless :
they cost 500 florins and they earn a little 10/turn. That make 50 turns just to repay them. Far longer than their life (if they are not killed before).

I've found them very useful. Do not just leave them on rescources as the value of rescources can fluctuate. Move them around, and do merchant battles with lower rated merchants, this can help improve the skill of your merchants.
I now have a merchant with 1 skill who earns me 50 florins a turn minimum, if i had more merchants it would be more, but i can only have 1 atm.

Hmm, well can merchants get multiple resources at once? Otherwise it does seem quite pointless.
No, but if you have more than 1 merchant on the same kind of rescource your income form that rescource doesn't just double, it incresses by more than that as your merchant is setting up a monopoly.

It seems odd though that if you try to assassinate a character of another faction, you will probably go to war with him if discovered. But if you send a merchant in to steal his resources, he won't mind and you'll remain neutral or allied...
I assume you can assassinate merchants, otherwise there'd be nothing to stop your rivals just stealing your resources and not having to have the expense and inconvenience of going to war with you?
They don't steal your rescources, merchants make money on top of what you make from trade etc as they are specialist traders.

Can you kick out or knock off merchants of enemy factions?
Yes, you do it with your own merchant. You seize his assets, and he disappears.

Cool, didn't know that. The same thing goes for priests. Your priest can, when trying to deal with a heretic, become a heretic himself. Whether a heretic can become a priest, I don't know.Originally Posted by edmont

He wasn't contradicting that - he was just saying that Priests can't convert heretics. Heretics always die if they lose the 'battle of wits', so to speak.Originally Posted by Hafnium
how many merchants do you need to have on one resource for a monopoly to occur... and how to merchants affect the taxes that the region gains from the trade of that resource??
When you merchants "battle" is it like a naval battle or what exactly do you mean by that?
they duke it out by whipping out their TI-Titanium calculators, or addicus or some thing of that nature. The dude that computes the fastest wins, and claims master of the other one.
Very funny, I have this image of two foppish merchants working thier abbacuses fervently trying to out do eachother.Originally Posted by myz

if assassination is successful, then the target's faction will not know what or who hit em. Only when assasination fails, do they discover the identity of the assassin. Just make sure you have a bunch of assassins around your merchant to protect him or something. Or you don't let your merchant sit his behind on a resource until you try to level him up. So for example, instead of waiting for the danish merchant to come and snipe you. You should activley seek out low level danish merchants, outduke them, level yourself up to significant high level, then sit down on some fat resource and not worry a thing.
For some reason everytime i have the money to make a merchant the danish send their own and destroy mine, its costing too much.
