Default Influence, gaining and keeping it.

How do characters gain influence, and beyond that, what factors contribute to them losing it?

There are a few obvious traits and ancillaries which explain that they give +1 influence, but other than that, I cannot see where characters are gaining and losing it from. One minute a guys sitting on top of the satrapy with a beautiful horse and a beautiful wife, maybe with an influence point or two and the next turn he's a nobody, with no friends, and no pretty green wreathes.

I've read Sylon's helpful guide on Authority and Loyalty some time ago -- very illuminating as to what the hell is going on in regards to the loyalty mechanics, but influence is not explained. Usually I find that a general/faction leader with high authority has a decent influence, but currently have one with nearly maxed out authority and the one influence wreath he had, he lost after turning Pontos into an Empire....

Seems to make no sense. Please, shine a light...

It seems really easy to max out on agents skill.. Authority has been explained and is quite easy to understand now.

Influence, and confidence seem to still baffle me. As well as the effect they have.

Then again it's still in production.

It is truly a mystery. Still someone with more experience in the matter must know something about it. Even knowing where it doesn't work is helpful, since we may be able to make precautionary measures.

I have no experience with M2's vanilla influence/chivalry system either, so I'm wondering if knowledge of that is enlightening in any way?

Anyone? Educated guesses are welcome at this point.

Not the faintest idea. I have noticed roman characters generally get way more influence than other factions I have played. I have also noticed there is no difference between influence and authority, which I find a little surprising. If a FL is god incarnate, why doesn't he have really high influence too? I have had a god incarnate with Pontos with influence of 2, which seems bizarre when a random roman FM has an influence of 8 or 9.
