    Default Tips for epic battles?

I am a big fan of TATW and love both strategy and battles. I play VH/VH and I only use pause for enforced breaks.

Any tips on camera controls, etc to maximize epic experience in battles? I usually find too busy trying to win (or not lose!) to experience proper cinematic action and feel I am missing out on beauty of models, graphics, etc. done by all the modders.

    Thanks,
    Chulain

Most cavalry factions demand constant maneuvering to maximize your killing efficiency. If you want to zoom in and watch your guys kills stuff, play Dwarves. Mash infantry then watch the carnage!

Exactly, so I am asking for tips to help better zoom to action. I have been unable to find e.g. instant zoom button, etc. so wondering if anyone has good technique they use?

The DEL key zooms to and follows the selected unit. The HOME key (?) zooms to the general. F1 shows you the shortcuts.

I like to slow down the action sometimes, so things are still happening but slow enough for me to take in some of the show. Is it holding down the SHIFT button while clicking on the battle speed button? Can't remember but I know that it wasn't super obvious and took me a while to discover.

I will try the shift slow down, thanks. I have looked at F1 and tried some, but always end up in mouse fury...

Any tips for shortcuts for battle commands from anyone? E.g is there a way to command multiple units to advanced together and attack or defend? I spend a lot of time micro managing units so they don't get slaughtered or stand around doing nothing.

Holding shift and clicking the speed buttons will allow fine adjustment of the game speed (e.g. 0.9 etc.)

You might already know this but this are my two cents to add.

Command multiple units to advanced together .... you can group the units to gather, with "g" or Ctrl+1/2. You van select the groups again by pressing 1 or whatever number the group is.

Thanks, I do use group. As far as I can figure though, you still need select each unit to attack separately if you need them to engage multiple enemy units, is that correct? As example with line of 4 infantry as group, you cannot order them to advance and engage multiple enemies to their front, you have select each one and order it to engage the unit directly in front and repeat for each.

I will certainly try the shift speed as think will help enjoy once units properly engaged.

yes, if you want to charge into the enemies; on the other hand, you can deploy a "line" of our troops to run past the enemy "line", and as soon as they get in contact with enemy units, the engage them in fight.

Could be useful to try. I guess this doesn't get a charge though, but maybe not so important for general infantry?

I am currently waiting on new RK release and then will get back to game and try all tips given, thanks!

the charge effect (and in general directing your troops against a specific enemy unit) might be important, depending on the faction you are playing and on the battle itself, some examples:

    - when you go for a 1:1 infantry vs infantry battle, or if you can field only infantry (Dwarves), the charge bonus of your troops might make the difference (both in terms of victories/defeats and in terms of how such victories are achieved)
    - same applies when you play Orcs; especially when you fight against Elves or Dwarves you need to surround them with your superior numbers, then you need to maneuvre well your troops
    - some submods have increased the charge values of infantry, then in this case it is always better to charge into enemy

usually, such a technique is useful when:

    - you have far more infantry than your enemy, then you can simply drag a line longer than the enemy infranty line behind them; this way the central part of your line will engage them and the wings will keep moving forward (thus putting themselves in a perfect position to flank the enemy)
    - you have larger numbers with cavalry to flank the enemy: in this case your infantry's sole role is that of holding the line while your cavalry surround and charge the enemy in the back/flank. In this case you can even deploy your infantry on a tinner line.

one extra notice: if you like to keep your infantry in a fixed line, you can also use the "hold your ground" button (the one with the shield); this way they will not push forward to pursue the enemy (although they will move to them if you click on the enemy unit)

As a vet, i can tell you that i rarely look at the battle itself anymore, and more look at how many numbers drop when a volley of my men hit a group of orcs. Though occasionally, i forget about the battle and watch those small beautiful situations unfold.

Someone here did some infantry testing, Swan Knights vs Barding Hird iirc, and found that the charge bonus was very significant. I think they were actually testing the effect of Spearwall formation, but one of the observations during testing was the big effect of an initial charge. Now, if infantry are just holding a line and something else is doing the killing like cavalry or archers, then its not such a big deal.

I guess can never really get away from some micro-management to win demanding battles, but some good tips to try reduce a little and be able to 'enjoy the moment'.

    Thanks.
