Default Unit icons, I think this looks much better

I just pasted the faction icons from here on top of the unit class icons. There's no reason it can't be a toggle option if CA definitely wants to keep the unit class icons. Personally, I think it looks much better this way.

    Another example: http://i.imgur.com/yMYNGxQ.jpg

Edit: I pasted the faction icons on top of the class icons, but I still would like to see the class. I think a class icon could go in the black box to the left of the chevrons. I think Napoleon Total War handled unit icons the best so the more similar it is to that the better.

    Lol NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

And here is way, your idea means that I with a quick look will not be able to see if my cav is being charge by spear men!
I prefer what they did in the rome 2, with the banners, which had faction icon and unit type printed on the banner.

I kind of like to think that is best represented by actual spacing variation between different unit types and cultures. That'd enhance the battlefield plus serve a functionality purpose.

Anyway, banners with the icon embedded would do the job just fine. As for the icons on the unit cards - they're not really needed with 3D renditions. You can already see what type of unit it is by merely looking at the card so.. not really sure why they're there anymore.

Yeah for your own unit, not the enemies units, which is the main problem.
Still think the flags is better in rome 2.

It also had the unit weight as part of the shape on the banner as well, which is what is missing from Attila. Now I can't really tell what is what since it's all square icons now. Same goes for the unit cards at the bottom, as they used to have the same shape as the banner in Rome 2.

I also rather preferred the half-shaded weapon icon in Rome 2 for cav, because trying to squeeze in a horse head and a weapon beside it makes it somewhat tough to read sometimes. The sword and spear cav icons are REALLY similiar, whereas melee cav and shock cav icons in Rome 2 are very obvious (sword vs spear icon w/ diagonal).

At the very least I wish they did the Napoleon thing with the faction flag beside the unit type icon. I really hated that R2 lost the fatigue indicator for one thing, but it showed quite a lot despite it all. Shogun 2 flag + Rome 2 flag shapes would be the best medium. If they want to use a floating icon they should've kept the Rome 2 unit mass icon shape variation as part of it instead of making everything a square icon with a weapon in it and then expecting the tooltip to do all the work.

I think the new icons are pretty ugly, wereas the old ones weren't very useful or in semblance with the rest of the ui

    So the question is.
Which one do you prefer, if no other alternative is available?

I agree. They can be as unappealing as they want as long as they do their job instead of making it harder. But an alternative like Shogun 2 would be the best, but what we have is better then nothing.

I think icons design are cool too... But I also think what we gained in coolness, we lost in information

They should bring some of the Attila icons in, but the Rome II method worked better. See here: http://imgur.com/a/oc82T

Truth to be told, I find the new square icons with troop's class superior to Rome 2's system. People are too concerned with screenshots that they tend to forget that battles are dynamic and most of the time, you are more occupied with actions than visual. Icons are not designed to be aesthetic or even immersive, they are there to convey information. I would prefer knowing which type of troops engage which rather than seeing 40 tiny faction icons.

If the small unit cards are the only ones, like in R2TW, I would prefer unit cards where you can see as much as possible from the unit itself. Imo CA really neglected the 2D art, I'm especially furious about the loss of the bigger unit cards that plopped up after right-clicking in earlier games. At least they stopped the eye-cancer style that started with S2TW and rose to rule with R2TW. It was one of the reasons I did not play R2TW for nearly two years (and so I did not buy any DLC...).

I do not care about MP where quick information might be the most important task. Again a pity that the big second unit cards were abandoned.I wouldn't care if the battlefield unit cards were defaced over and over with info symbols if the unit could be seen also in the big unit window like in older TW games.

OP's suggestion is really good. I think the unit class icons are a really ugly feature of Atilla. There are much better ways to make it easier to see different unit types than to smack an ugly square on the unit. Replacing banners is also a bad idea. Banners have been in Total War games ever since original Shogun.
