its a mechanic and a very good mechanic imo. There are just so many cretan people on crete and to have an infinite number of auxiliaries would be wierd

Yes, having a (high!) cap of 12 allows space for the Thracian/bitynian and all the various Syrian archers to join your legions. Not to mention slingers and other missile infantry that rome can use...

also the caps are based on the number of historical regiments known of each named cohort.

Not really. The Ala Batavorum in Germania Minor is restricted to 1 unit. The explanation in the description is, that they were recruited as Equites Singulares Augusti (the emperors personal bodyguards).

This is not really historically correct. Even if the majority of these Singulares were probably Batavians during Augustus reign, there was more than 1 unit of Singulares Augusti (depending on the timeframe). And additionally there have been a lot of Alae Batavorum in the roman empire. Finally, during early empire the Equites Singulares Augusti were called Custodes Augusti (or something like that) before Trajan re-established and re-named them.

And btw, they come with Marian Reforms. Which is pretty weird, if not a bug.

Do you have a source for there being more than 1 recorded Ala of Batavians? There was an Ala I Batavorum Miliaria stationed in Dacia in Imperial times, no other Batavian cavalry wing I am aware of?

The other units are listed as Cohors Batavorum (there was 8 of them in the Batavian rebellion so a cap of 8 units for them)

"They were a warlike people, skilled horsemen, boatmen and swimmers. They were therefore excellent soldier-material. In return for the unusual privilege of exemption from tributum (direct taxes on land and heads that most peregrini were subject to), they supplied a disproportionate number of recruits to the Julio-Claudian auxilia: one ala and 8 cohortes. They also provided most of the emperor Augustus' elite regiment of German Bodyguards (Germani corpore custodes), which continued in existence until AD 68" - Garrison Life at Vindolanda, Birley 2002

(Also a 9th Cohort stationed at Hadriens wall, so you get 1 miliara batavian unit late game)

The description just states the Batavians also served in the Emperor's bodyguards, and these units are not capped. They are called "Equites Singulares Augusti" as you say. That is a different unit to the one cavalry auxiliary regiment... If you look closely at the unit in game now, there is a mix of "Roman" praetorians and more Germanic looking guards. A little bonus i put in.

As for the reformed auxiliaries arriving in Marian reforms in DEI, that was a gameplay decision over historical decision as it takes a long time in the GC to reach imperial reforms...

Edited, nevermind. I just saw that you've mentioned already 8 cohorts taking part in Batavian revolt

That is the point I made. The "Ala Batavorum" is different to the "Cohors Batavorum" units you refer to. One cavalry regiment, many more infantry cohorts (maybe with some additional mounted with the infantry) However we cannot do mixed units of cav/infantry so for gameplay I made only the Ala units as cavalry, "Cohors equitata" are simplified to just infantry (however most batavian units are just titled "Cohors" so would be mostly infantry based).

Also there may have been more units that we have lost historical records of, but I based the numbers mostly on the numbers recorded up to Hadriens rule.

Anyway hope that helps make the caps make sense.
