    Default Desolation Emptying the Map

After seeing the preview build on Youtube I saw a large number towns being desolated early on in the game. I'm worried that because its so expensive to recolonize that the map will become very empty by the mid point in the game.

Could it be possible that in some cases if no faction claims the desolate area that an emergent faction could form and colonize the area? So the map doesn't just become completely empty with desolate regions.

    It's an interesting prospect.

I'm assuming at least one faction will have the coin to rebuild them each time.

Indeed, but one thing for sure, "If I can't be the king of the world, then I will be king of the ashes!!"

Hopefully there'll be an achievement called "King of Ashes" where you have to desolate every single province in the campaign.

i think the point is that otherwise we won't get any migration and things will just be static, i suppose a better way to do it would be have a few waves of tribes after the huns and have older tribes move east again if they come under pressure

I think this massive desolation could be a good thing. We can't think of this game as another "expand to 100 regions and win" Total War. If they have accomplished what they set out to do, it'll be an achievement to just survive until the end of the campaign time. I really hope they have, because becoming the biggest colored blob is getting a little old.

    Hmm yeah.

I guess it depends how the game will flow. If each barbarian faction cuts equal parts out of the Romans, then they probably wouldn't have enough coin to recolonize it. If there is more of a chance for imbalance of power between the barbarians, then yeah, they would probably have enough coin to resettle it.

In a way I hear ya, but wouldn't that render the feature useless? This is actually one that has me intrigued about this game. I mean think about it, lets say a certain enemy faction really sticks in your craw. We now have the ability to not only destroy the faction, but also annihilate all their regions till nothing remains? I like it!

It was said that the Desolate region could be repopulate by an army, but it would destroy an (unknown) percentage of this army (to represent the warriors who settle in the province).

In some sense, desolated regions resemble damaged buildings in Rome 2, just more extreme. Sun Jetzu said in his interview that it was quite frustrating to wait for like 40 turns to accumulate enough coins to resettle a desolated regions. To avoid such scenario, maybe a desolated region could slowly (for example, like 10 turns) recover by itself at no cost, provided that the process is not interupted by wars.

...........and become a independent faction itself, unless that faction already is alive.

    Think of it this way;
the area of Pella is ruined and after 20 turns or ruin, a event would pop up saying something like "the people of Pella has begin to return to the old city site"
and after 10 turns it would return as a level 1 city and as a faction called kingdom of Macedonia.

we already seem to have the liberale Button on every settlement wich implies that we have emergant factions for very region already.

The coast to resettle should be smaller.

Yeah thats what I more or less mean that a region which has a not yet existing emerging faction in that region should do that.

I think the cost is fair enough, I mean to low would make people do it to much, there have to be consequence for a players action, and the loses if a AI does it.

I have a feeling the emergent factions will just be the minor faction cultural roster of whichever faction originally owned the region at the game start with a name like "Egypt" or "Britain" slapped on.

i find it a great feature
in past games cities only become bigger and richer by the time, now it seems to be more dynamical wich is a fresh approach
