Default Yesterday I had my first crusade!!

    Morning!

Yesterday i bought the german version in Austria and i played it till 1am in the night
Finally i had my first Crusade with England and it was great!
First you get an advice from the Pope that you have to build an army with minimum 5 units in 10 turns, and then you klick on a button to go on crusade, then you have no time limit like in MTW where your army is decreasing when it took you too long.
and you can hire nearly in every province fanatics, a big cruzifix for the morale, crusader knights etc..
and the crusade took me to antiochia (egypts), i cleary won and looted and conquered the province..
the AI (egypt) undertaked nothing to drive me away... (weak KI)...
and after 5 turns they wanted a trade agreement and peace.. which is not realy realistic...

and another point which is not so good like in MTW is that nobody joins the crusade... in MTW every (catholic) army joined in your crusader army, and when not you had to fight with them or the pope was angry... this missed completly

but after all i had my first POPE
*hehe* after the election from my cardinal then you can hardly do everything you want*G*

You can hire mercenaries in most provinces, but the crusading units - pilgrims, crusader knights, crusader sergeants, the grand cross, etc are mainly available in catholic lands and/or close to the crusade goal (where you also can get crusader foot knights described as "horseless knights".

Hmm, still weak diplomatic AI? Or were they just scared you would roll right over them with your massive crusader army?

Well i mailed the store i have pre-ordered from, and they sent the game away today. That means i will get the game tomorrow so i can see for myself

    Sorry for the questions, but:
What is it that you can do to manipulate the pope, can you make wishes about where to make crusades? What about your relations with the papacy when you have your "own" pope elected?
And finally, can you do crusades even without asking and the pope will still show you some respect?
Can't wait to declare my own crusade. Or Jihad..

I didn't choose the Pope yet,but improved his attitude to me by accomplishing 3 missons :2 were reqruit a priest in designed towns. One was do not attack an enemy catholic faction for 7 turns.I play v.h./v.h. and don't think it would be so easy manipulate on ths dif. setting.

the one problem i have with crusades is that i dont really want to go on any yet they seem essential if you are going to complete the victory conditions! im not going to go into some big anti-religion lecture but it is slightly annoying that i have to do the bidding of some fat old man in the vatican hundreds of miles away!

then again the pressure from the church on the christian factions back then was pretty intense to say the least so i suppose i cant complain as it is realistic

Then put your old fat man in his chair. Then you can feel better beacouse the old fat man thousands of miles away atleast came from your lands. Or you could look at it like this: All the people you are "opressing" aren't real so it dosen't count.

I got mine yesterday in Austria too...and played till 2am
I also went crusading. I'd annoyed the pope a bit previously by fighting scotland, so in order to make reparations, he requested that my heir led the crusade personally.

The Egyptians were so scared of my crusader army that at one point their diplomats offered me settlements in order to make peace!!

What does that mean? Are you saying its easy on very hard, or you have to have high standing with the pope to go on one , ie you are unworthy to consider a crusade?

Acording to the CA intervews I have read when the Pope dies or your faction leader dies you have the chance to be un-excomunicated.

The special crusader units you can recruit for a Crusade do yes. All the units in your army also get a red cross banner above them in battle to show they are part of a crusade.

Maybe a bit off topic, but how will a very distant empire be handled, I mean I asume there is still "distance to capitol"? Cause this would be a real ball-buster for say the spanish in the Americas, or a small empire in the east.

It's nowhere near as big a penalty as in Rome. Besides, it's best to have castles and not cities when owning settlements far away. Their public order is naturally very high. So shouldn't be that much of a problem.

My capital is Venice, and I own Crete and Rhodes. No problem there (Crete has a city, Rhodes has a castle).
