A consistent 11th place in all of the tables... No real surprises for Britain there. Corruption (whilst inevitable everywhere) is not something that is remotely considered a big problem. The Honours for Cash scandal is the biggest part of it, but it's not a terribly big problem in terms of power, etc - more annoying, really.

Interesting. Canada moved from 12th in 2004 to 14th in 2005 and 2006. Turkey moved from 77th in 2004 to 60th in 2006. Nice to know things are improving in at least one of my countries.

I think this was partly due to EU pressure on Turkey.

Notice that "socialist Europe" has excellent ratings, contrary to what the right-wing always says.

Not as much as you might think. The EU's ability to apply pressure is largely restricted to other issues, like Cyprus or the status of minorities. Beyond those (and not so much in the second case), the Turkish public just sees the EU pressure as an attempt to interfere in their internal affairs, and begin to buck the EU's authority, as it were.

I'd say that it was Bulent Ecevit (RIP) who was responsible. He was in power until the AKP took over in 2001, at the height of the financial crisis. The AKP were voted into power because people thought they weren't as corrupt as the previous parties and because people blamed Ecevit's party for the financial crisis. But the laws that reduced corruption were actually enacted by the previous government (Ecevit's), and before the official acceptance as an EU candidate, but didn't have an effect until after the AKP had taken power. Basically, Ecevit's government did all the hard work to reduce corruption, but the AKP got the credit.

Finally, the Turks' drive to reform is increasingly disassociated with their EU bid. A common mentality nowadays in among Turks is to continue with the reforms, bring the country up to EU levels, and then spit in the EU's eye and strike out on their own. Basically, they want to use the EU as a motivator, but not to actually join it. And the latter sentiment seems to be a foregone conclusion, given the almost vicious opposition to Turkey's EU bid among EU members such as France, Germany, Holland, and Austria, as well as the Papacy.

I imagine the biggest hit to the Canadian level was the Sponsership scandal.

I suppose that would depend on what type of corruption these surveys measure. Is it an aggregate of low-level corruption, or does it measure the number of major corruption scandals in a given time period? Or a combination?

But you're right, the Sponsorship scandal certainly did hurt the Liberal government and is the biggest corruption scandal in recent memory. Now I'm waiting to see what type of scandal the Conservatives can come up with.

Whose joke was it that said "the word 'politics' comes from the word 'poly' for 'many' and the word 'tic' for 'blood-sucking parasite'"?

At least our press is still the freest (funny word that), eh?

Too bad its quality is down the drain.
The common culture of a tribe is a sign of its inner cohesion. But tribes are vanishing from the modern world, as are all forms of traditional society. Customs, practices, festivals, rituals and beliefs have acquired a flut and half-hearted quality which reflects our nomadic and rootless existence, predicated as we are on the global air-waves.

We set our aims high on these matters. Having SHARED #1 position is not good.

Though I think our parliament could use a good kick in the ass for their corruption. (which here in perception starts already from not paying your TV-lisence, coming to work every time and so forth. compared to other countries they are saints but here they are expected to qualify as real ones)

Hmm, compared to our neighbors were corrupt bastards, 8th isn't bad, but considering our relatives I consider it horrible, at least things are stable.

Can't believe we (New Zealanders) are among the first!

We had a big scandal with taxpayer-funded electioneering... The political parties have spent over a million dollars more than they were supposed to spend, including The Green Party (Come on guys, I donated $50 to you guys last year during election)! Very disappointing.
