    Default Discussion Thread

Keep all discussion and commentary here, rather than in the nomination/poll threads. Posts here are to be civil and constructive, and focus on why a game is good or bad, not why anyone would vote for such a game. We will moderately this strictly, so you have been warned.

Refer to this thread for the rules

And remember, if you have any questions, feel free to PM myself, Mhaedros, or IlluminatiRex.

I feel iffy about nominating any game as indie game of the year, because there are no clear definitions of what constitutes an indie game. Independent of a publisher? Only sold online? It has to be a small game? Only if the game experiments, for example with artistic elements of Transistor or Hotline Miami's violence? If I wanted to, I could nominate South Park: The Stick of Truth because it's innovative and vulgar, even though it's made by Ubisoft. What do you guys think about that?

Best character of 2014 has to be Styx from Styx Master of Shadows. While most stealth games have you play as a Hercules, which usually doesn't fit, Styx is like dark Quasimodo. Styx is this gritty ugly hunch back type, and when he crawls around the game you can sort of feel how the orcs for Lord of the Rings moved around as well. Tumbling about. The way he jumps on ledges or takes out light sources, but best of all the way he speaks. The way he talks. This video sums it up.

I also have to agree with the person who made the splash art for the best music award - Transistor does it really really well. If you are like me, pause the game just to hear your protagonist sing a song, then you know it's a damn good music game.

Strategy games have recently seen the surge of turn based type strategy games which makes me miss the old RTS genre (from Age of Empire to Total War) - Door Kickerscomes with something genius in the way that you control your "rainbow six" squad. You can either go straight in real time controlling one guy, or you can set up paths for your whole team to go, look around corners, wait for your command. The simplicity is perfect, and that may explain why there are some really good mods as well, namely Blood Contracts (which may question your morals ).

Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

Thank you for reminding me. Mhaedros made the art for the competition, so a big thank you to Mhaedros!

That information is in bold on each thread but just to get it out there as many times as possible:

Each member may nominate two games, both of which must be included in the same post
Also, if a member nominates more than two games per category, only the first two listed shall be counted. The any others will be ignored.

Can I nominate a game which was released in 2011 but only became available on western markets in 2014? Prior to this year to buy Hatoful Boyfriend you had to go to an very obscure Japanese website and use google translate to navigate the website, if you could see the Japanese characters at all, so for all intents and purposes it was unavailable outside of Japan and Korea

Noif I will be honest with you...Sports games nor sim games came up in discussions either this year or last year. I never even thought about them and when we were discussing categories no one else mentioned them. I'll bring it up and we will discuss them now.

We will consider it due to the rather unique case of this game.

I suggest you emphasize that a nominator need to mention soundtracks, not just the game, in the Best Soundtrack Nominations (2014).

Two more categories have been added: Sports games and Simulators.

Also, we have decided to allow the pigeon game due to its unique circumstances of only having a small release before last year. Similar considerations may be made but re-releases are still not allowed.

I will extend nominations for a few days to allow the new categories to receive a decent number of nominations.

I'm not sure why people keep saying 2014 was a bad year for gaming, there was a ton load of awesome games, specially from indies.

Regarding feedback, would had been nice to see something related to story/writing, and maybe something alongside most atmospheric/visually striking/style category too. Maybe next year.

How so? Less categories would mean some games worthy of recognition would likely be left out due to the lack of categories to identify them in, surely that can't be a good result? (especially in a year when indies have gone forth with glory and multiple AAA games failed to make us see stars (unless seeing stars in the literal sense, meaning one closed ones console/PC and went outside to watch stars instead of playing a buggy mess))

Okay so there is only a few days left, everyone. There are three categories that need some attention. Platformer and simulator have received few nominations and sports has received none. Remember: if a game is not nominated then it cannot enter the voting phase. It is your responsibility to nominate a game or games.

Sometime on Sunday (my time, at least) the voting phase should open. So if you have any last minute additions please add them soon
