    Default Post Marius...

I apologize up front if this has been asked before, normally I peruse several pages of old posts to see if my question has been answered in the recent past but I'm in the middle of a game atm.

I played RTW and got bored with it a while ago, I just picked up the expansion and reinstalled the original game and decided to see if I could finish it before installing the expansion.

After the marius reforms in RTW I can now build Legionary Calvary and Cohorts, but is there any way to upgrade my Principi and Velites ect. Probably not but I thought I would ask. If there is no way what can you do with them disband them and build new/ better units? :hmmm:

    All hail the Emperor...

No way to train/retrain Hastati, Principes, Triarii, Velites, and Equites (probably more than this) after the marius reforms. You can disband them though. Right click the unit card to pull up the unit stats and information. On the bottom left of that window you'll see a button to disband. They'll be added to the population of whatever settlement/province they're in and probably go back to the closest settlement if you're in outside of your territory.

Kinda cool because I find triarii to be very valuable after the marius reforms so I train a ton of them before I build an imperial palace. Of course as their ranks thin out, I'll trade them in for cheaper and weaker auxilia.

There probably is a way to retrain them, but not conventionally. You'll have to manipulate the export_descr_buildings.txt to include hastati, principes, triarii, etc. Wonder if this would work or return you with an error.

I usually don't disband the pre-marian units. By the time of the reforms they usually tend to have quite nice exp also making them tuff mofos
I just use them and merge them together until they just run out. It's also good to have newer units or mercs in these stacks as cannonfodder also to make the veterans last longer.

At some time when you have towns all built etc you might want to give the old men a retirement they deserve, then just make a new stack out of them and send them against your toughest enemy with autocombat . For me the result was that the stack killed like 5 full stacks of gauls and captured 2 towns before they had gotten so thin that I just left the remaining 3 gold-chevron troops as a relic to guard Rome
