Default Best Auxiliaries and Where to Get Them?

I am starting a Roman campaign and want to add a little more diversity to my armies. Basically what I want to do is start with a base of 1 general and 10 cohorts consisting of 2 veterans, 1 eagle, and 7 standard units. This gives me 9 slots to play with different auxiliaries which will probably fulfill missile and calvary roles.

To that end, what are the best units for these roles and where can I find them? I like having archers that can stand protected behind my line of legionaries. I looked at the wiki and found the some cathraphracts which for some reason need to be recruited in Germany. Are there any other suggestions?

What is the explanation for Cataphracts being recruited in Germany? Aren't they a middle eastern thing?

Which cataphracts? There are some heavy lancers I believe in that area and some Sarmatian cavalry but there shouldn't be any eastern units.

On the auxiliary map it says that the Romanized Suromatae Uaezdaettae are recruited from Germania Minor, Magna Germania, Silesia, and Suebia.

Are you looking at the map of AOR recruitment or actually experiencing this in game?

He's not talking about any Eastern units, but I think Sarmatian cataphracts can be recruited from one of the Germanic regions, right (maybe only in the IA campaign)? I know you can get them for sure in Sarmatia of course.

Sauromatae Uaezdaettae (Romanized) are Sarmatian Cataphracts, not Syrian. They are normally only recruitable in the Sarmatian regions. However, Rome's auxiliary buildings in DeI act as a recruitment center for surrounding AOR units in a way.

I don't really follow. Is the information on the wiki incorrect and you cannot recruit them from an auxiliary building in Germany? That would make sense seeing as the Sarmatians were Iranians.

I feel it might be best if there was an optional update that would make it so you can recruit all types of auxillia from conquered regions from a single auxillia buildings. Would make making armies a lot less of a hassle.

That would defeat the purpose of the AOR system.

The wiki (honga I assume it is) is very good and well done but sometimes not fully accurate.

@ Alexander Germania/Sarmatia gives a good variety of heavy infantry and Sarmatian cavalry, if you want variety. What sort of cavalry were you after? There is some medium cavalry in Iberia, and there should be Cantabrians in the north

The german provinces are basically bordering Sarmatia in the GC map, so its not that unreasonable for Sarmatians to be recruitable from Germany with appropriate infrastructure, if CA put Sarmatia in the right place. Presumably, the Sarmatians would have moved a lot, lie the otber nomadic tribes, so their actual 'homeland' is probably hard to define, and somewhat debatable

Yes, Sarmatia is basically in the right place, but what you don't see in the Rome 2 map is that Sarmatian territory extended from the game's Sarmatia province all the way to the Roxolani starting area (they're a Sarmatian tribe), in the area north of Ponto-Caspia. Historically, in the game's timeframe, the Sarmatians conquered/absorbed Royal Scythia and migrated into Europe - the Iazyges were a Sarmatian tribe that migrated into Pannonia and gave the Romans a hard time on the Danube border there. Actually, you can see a little of this in the IA campaign map, where the nomadic factions have all moved around somewhat.

    For Heavy Infantry :

Batavian Auxiliaries, acting as bodyguard for my general (who is in a unit of Praetorian Guards).

For Cavalry (Light to Medium) :

Liguriae Epos (Romanized), recruitable in Northern Italy.
130 men per unit, good charge, pretty good attack and defense, average stamina (if I'm not mistaken), can throw javelins.
    Pretty much good all rounders

When you conquer the Aquitania Province, you will have access to the Horse Resource and the Remi Mairepos Medium Cavalry unit that are, IMO, one of the best cavalry unit that are available to the Romans in Western Europe (didn't went East towards Asia so there may be better ones that I don't know of).
110 (or 130, not sure) men per unit, very good charge (for this type of cavalry), good attack and defense.

With the Horse Ressource fully upgraded and the other military buildings fully upgraded, you can recruit 3 golden chevrons Remi Mairepos with excellent charge, attack/defense and morale.

Quite OP to be honest ^^

Ok, thanks Augustusng. That makes a lot more sense now. Krasnaia, yeah the Gallic AoR cavalry are pretty awesome. I remembered the Germanic/Sarmatian combo because I'm using them a lot in my Carthaginian campaign. They back up my phalanx well
