Default Medieval 2: Total War Gold (STEAM) - Right mouse button double-click not registering.

I have recently reinstalled M2TW: Gold using the Steam CD key as one of the disks seems to have finally died. I installed TATW with MOS successfully and everything - including the mouse buttons - worked fine.

I went back to play it later and found the following mouse commands no longer worked:

    In Battle:

    • Double-click right mouse to run - it only walks the units.
    • Double-click the left muse button whilst paused to open the enemy unit panels.

    In Campaign:

    • Double-click left mouse to open a neutral/enemy army or city's information panel in the campaign.
    • Oddly enough I can open the information panel with a single press of the middle-mouse button. Using it for any of the other issues doesn't not work though.

It seems like a really bizarre issue - especially since it appeared out of nowhere. I am using a laptop and both the USB mouse and the trackpad one are displaying identical behaviour (DxDiag available if needed).

Has anyone else experienced this problem before, I've searched for it and I have not found any answers relating to the said issues. Any ideas?

Assuming you're playing TATW, have you asked their forum?

I haven't, no - I just presumed it was more of a general M2TW issue. I'll go and ask there and see if it has come up before.

EDIT: For no clear reason the mouse seems to work again as normal. The reason why is beyond me, but at least I can play now.

the issue is with the game, but as to what causes it is beyond me. I have the issue on and off all the time whether im using my razor death adder, a cheap Microsoft mouse, or the mousepad. it gets to be really annoying and sometimes I have to reload the game 4-5 times or restart my computer. happens in shogun2 also (which is even worse because I play in battle realism), but I can usualy fix it by holding alt and cycling through all my programs until the game is selected again. doesn't seem to work for medieval 2 though.

I have noticed over the years with Rome1 or Medieval2, and no matter the mouse, when the game eats up so many resources without releasing any, the mouse pointer and controls are the first to go.

Maybe something the way Windows is programmed to prioritize tasks and mouse is about bottom of the list.

well that seems like something simply restarting your computer should fix, and yet its been 2 weeks since I've been able to get the double click to work with ME 2. and if i'm not mistaken units technically only charge when you double click a target that's within their charge range. so unfortunately clicking on a unit then hitting the run button doesn't do much. makes cavalry pretty much useless as they get no charge bonus, and once they get into combat they'll never switch back to their lances for the rest of battle.

If it's a save, does it do the same thing in a new campaign? Does it do it in a custom battle?

it does it on any save or new campaign, and across all scenarios (grand campaign, Americas, britania, crusades, teutonic, SS 6.4). I've tried adjusting double click speed as I read somewhere that use to be an issue way back, but even setting it at the lowest setting changes nothing. the game is definitely registering the mouse as when I double click on settlements (which should bring up the info page) the sound bite thing plays twice over, and if I just keep clicking on a settlement it sounds like a machine gun going off. just the things that are suppose to happen when you double click (like opening info pages on map, army details, or running/charging in battle) don't work.

Does it do it on other games?

sometimes in shogun 2 if I minimize the game. It fixes itself though if when shogun 2 is open I hold alt and press tab till I cycle through all my 'active' programs until im back on shogun 2 (so technically I never selected another program). this doesn't work for medieval 2.

Medieval2 is too old for such things. I'm starting to think it's time to format and a fresh install of Windows.

well im a bit hesitant to format my hardrive and reinstall windows just for issues in one game. not to mention I've heard of problems with doing so once windows upgrades to 8.1 (which it ninja upgraded on me). just did a "verify integrity" thing through steam and got a message saying about 94 files failed to be verified and started a ~1 GB update for the game so maybe that'll fix it.

I would hope so. I understand vanilla in the Steam version is still broken though.

well the double click thing for now seems to be solved. however i think those errors steamed detected and tried to fix were because the americas campaign folder was still my SS 6.4 folder. so ya....SS 6.4 is doing so hot anymore.

Any Kingdoms mod in the mods folder is using a Kingdoms campaign as its base including mine.

If you used the old rename the campaign trick, you maybe better off using this. http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...te-Compatible)
