    Default Ballista won't attack Balrogs?

Just recently started playing MTW2 with TATW and love the game. But now I've got a problem; playing as HE and get besieged in Rivendell. I'm chipping away at this massive orc army of 1500+ with only about 500 elves and the enemy AI seems to break.

All the unit pull back past the last bridge and just stay there.

So I move my units up and take out their ballista, then start taking out their trolls using my ballista. Done, their units don't attack at all. So I target the Barlogs (3 of them in a unit)...and nothing happens. My ballista refuse to fire. They get the firing action and then nothing happens; no ballista flying or anything.

Anybody got any suggestions? Because simply charging the Balrogs gets my entire army slaughtered and unable to fight the rest of the orcs.

Its probably because the Balrog is surround by your forces. This may not happen to everyone, but I've had multiple battles against the Balrog and Sauron where my Ballistae, archers, and javelins flat out refuse fire, and I think its because those guys are surrounded by my own forces. The trick is to have one melee unit fight him at a time, then your ranged units should fire at him.

Or get catapults. Catapults don't give a damn (they are not as accurate though)

Well they weren't surrounded by anybody really. Ballista were up front and the AI wasn't engaging them, but the ballista wouldn't fire on the balrogs. They would fire on the trolls, the orcs next to them, the rest of the army behind the Balrogs, but not the balrogs themselves

Had to reload a different save and fight them on the bridge to Rivendell instead.

You Ballistae may have been too close to the target. If they refuse to fire for any reason, simply try moving further away.
