" Microsoft Backs Down On Vista License Transfers

Following a firestorm of criticism, Microsoft has relaxed rules that would have limited the number of times a user could reassign his or her Windows Vista license to a new machine. "

Nick White, a program manager on the Vista team, gave Microsoft's reason for the switch on the group's blog. "It's become clear to us that those original terms were perceived as adversely affecting an important group of customers: PC and hardware enthusiasts," White wrote.
message on my winXP right now : 13 days left for activation

The most annoying, frustrating, time wasting feature I have ever had with WinxP home version. I am tired explaining on the phone, that I just reconfigured my system with a new graphics card and reinstalled winXP, because of a HD crash or cleaning up my hard drive and no, I do not have the same copy of winXP installed on multiple systems.

    Great news.
But I think I'll stick with XP for the coming years as well. (until dx10 FORCES me to switch, but I'm still hoping this won't happen)

    Oh, it will.
And when somebody e-mails you a document made in DX10 office you don't be able to open it unless you have DX10 as well.
That's how they force you to switch.
I would be using Windows 3.0 if it wasn't for compatibility issues (ie: if modern games would run on 3.0, and there is no real reason shy they shouldn't)
The only reason why I'm using XP and not '95 (the first windows version I ever bought myself) is because '95 was simply a piece of crap. (I liked 3.0 far more).

i'm guessing DX10 is gonna make me switch to Vista much sooner than i want to...

i honestly don't see why, if you buy software, you cannot install it on as many machines as you personally use... i mean, i have 3 PCs... my laptop, for business use, my gaming PC, which is with me at uni, and an older PC that i can't be bothered to sell, which is still reasonably modern. if i buy somethin,g i don;t see why i can't put it on all 3 devices. likewise to buying a CD, why can't i rip that CD to my PC, so i can play the music there, and from there to my mp3 player too... all for personal use.
its not like i'm made of money to afford buying 3 copies of Vista for 3 machines. what a total waste of money that is...

Well, there is no reason to get windows for business uses. That is what linux is for.

tBP: come live in the Netherlands.
Here we have a RIGHT (by law) to make and use copies for personal use and even share them with friends, no matter what Microsoft says.
Even downloading and using copyrighted material is perfectly legal here. (uploading on the other hand is illegal).
We even pay royalties over empty DVD-R's so we don't have to feel guilty at all.
    God I love Dutch law.

Well, there are a lot of reasons why they shouldn't. Such as the inability to deal with modern cd-roms as well. There is also the problem with outdated kernels, and the lack of modern cpu instructions, and the lack of ability to deal with GPUs, the lack of ability to deal with very large hard drives, lack of support for dual core, lack of Fat32 support, lack of usb support. Yeah, that is a real good good OS.

I guess i'm one of the few people who liked Windows 95 and 98... I still have a Win98 machine upstairs, upgraded it from 95 in 2001

sad thing is, because i've kept it in so good shape.... it works better than almost all my other machines....
