Woops, I accidentally hit a key on my keyboard and somehow it opened a bunch of windows and posted this thread while I was writing it. And since there is no option on my screen to delete this thread, I'll just finish the post here instead. Also, the title has an obvious typo in it.

There is a big thread discussing how to convert culture to your own after conquering a settlement. If you don't convert culture, the settlement will have a high rate of unrest.

I made this thread to clarify some confusion about culture spread. The main confusion comes from people noticing that some buildings seem to grant cultural conversion but then looking at the same buildings later and not seeing any cultural conversion.

This is because most buildings that grant cultural conversion do not do it consistently every turn, but their conversion appears for, say, one turn out of every 4 turns. This means that if your government type has 1% cultural conversion during this turn, next turn it will probably go to no cultural conversion for 3 more turns, then go back to 1% for a turn.

During the turns where the cultural conversion disappears, it is not listed at all in the stats of the building. This is what causes people to see cultural conversion on a building at one point but be unable to find it there at another point during gameplay. It is because you are not observing the building during the turn that the cultural conversion is set to 1%.

Also, keep in mind that not all government buildings grant cultural conversion. For example, the primary Roman government type (starting with Regional Pacification and upgrading from there) grants 0% cultural conversion on the first and fourth level of government, but 1% cultural conversion on the 2nd and 3rd level of government. I'm not sure why upgrading from 3rd to 4th level government removes the 1% cultural conversion every 4th turn, but it does.

There are also colony buildings (at least for Rome - not sure about other factions) that you can build in settlements once they reach certain qualifications. These colonies also have something like 1% cultural conversion every turn or every 4th turn (can't remember exactly).

Another thing to keep in mind is that for some reason, cultural conversion appears to occur quickly at first, but as a settlement approaches 100% of your cultural type, the cultural conversion slows down. This has caused my capital of Rome to still be sitting at like 98% of my home culture at 500+ turns into the game even though it has two buildings that supposedly convert 1% every four turns. For some reason, the conversion slows down drastically as it gets closer to 100% culture.

Finally, the last thing to mention is that there may be other factors that influence culture. Some people in other threads have mentioned that provinces can receive cultural influence from neighboring provinces, and also that the characteristics of a governor may possibly influence cultural growth in a city.
