milans special units?

what are milans special unit or units? i know they have better crossbowmen but if there a specific name for it and how much better is it? i am debating between venice and milan and i know venice has there special heavy infantry along with i think good crossbowmen still. i didnt play MTW so i dont know if they had special units in that.

some cavalry unit.. forgot the name of it
thought it was regular heavy cavalry though.. didn't see any crossbows on them

it says they have poor cavalry? yet there special unit is a cavalry unit?

what do you guys think? is milan worth playing? or should i stick to venice?

yea in alot of screen shots ive seen, milan ends up taking over france, while venice usually doesnt expand that much, with franch in such a vonerable position and battling with england milan tends to own with the ai... this doesnt mean theyre better units than venice just in a better position on the map...

haha yea it does but milans are still cool and they seem to have good positioning ect.

can anyone give me a bit of a background on milan from MTW?

Milan wasn't in.
They were simply known as the italians back then and combined with Venice.

yea but milan is doing pretty well for ai too

i think i just might start off as milan, ill feel special(i dont think many others are starting as milan) and it should be a challenge.

yea my first campaigns would either be milan then venice or venice then milan, and sicily 3rd. im not even italian yet all my favorite 3 are lol. anyways, venice seems to have a pretty good chance of being the controllers of greece after a war with byzantium, and can gain wealth and power from greece while crusading. with all these cities they can get enough power to war with catholic nations quicker than milan being surrounded by france, hre, venice, and the papacy, with sicily taking islands to the south.

Yay for me, I wont feel guilty for not playing as my country, because my faction was destroyed years before medieval!(Kingdom of Israel), so I guess I'll take spain or Milan, love them

The Milanese have an interesting combination of special units.

As far as unique units go they have Genoese Crossbowmen and Genoese Militia Crossbowmen, as well as Famiglia Ducale (as mentioned before these are super-heavy cavalry). The reason for their weakness "poor offensive cavalry" is because they lack chivalric knights, which are no doubt faster than their heavily armoured superiors, and are tougher than men-at-arms.

I am interested in seeing if they have any late game (ie. gunpowder) unique units, as this is the only way I can rationalise the Milanese having "good late technology".

On an historical note, I beleive the Famiglia Ducale are a sort of "replacement" for the Gothic Knights that the Italians had in MTW. The idea behind this is that although the Italians did not produce gothic armour (which was German), the Milanese were very famous for thier Milanese armour, which didn't look quite as fancy, but was arguably stronger due to better forging technology. I'm hoping that Famigila Ducale are representative of this in some way.
