    Default "Unspecified error" on startup

I get the following error message on startup:

"Medieval 2: Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit."

Also, the title screen of EBII shows up, taking up approximately the leftmost third of my screen, but not quite extending to the bottom.

I have read the FAQ, searched the forum, and tried various fixes. But I still can't get the game to start properly.

    Please note:

    1. I am not running the Steam version
    2. The installation of both Medieval II: Total War is new (I have uninstalled and re-installed multiple times), and I have installed EB 2.01
    3. I am running Windows 7
    4. My version of Medieval II: Total War is a recently downloaded Gold Edition (including Kingdoms) from Amazon.

Here is what I have tried so far after reading the FAQ and various posts:

    1. I installed everything outside of Program Files
    2. I ran Vanilla before installing EB 2.01
    3. I updated the security profile for the Medieval II: Total War folder
    4. I have tried the overwriting EBII.cfg and launch.bat with the versions from EBII_launch-fix.rar
    5. I have also tried editing EBII.cfg as suggested by two different posts to prevent the program from opening in windowed format
    6. I have tried edited the properties of

Is there anything else I should try? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What does your medieval2.preferences.cfg say? If it conflicts with the EBII.cfg, you can get an issue where it's overwriting it with the wrong resolution.
