Default The United Arab Emirates, or "Little Sparta," in the fight against the Islamic State

In the UAE, the United States has a quiet, potent ally nicknamed ‘Little Sparta’

I thought this was a fascinating article, not just because of the great level of cooperation and fielding an air base where US and UAE fighter jets fly together to bomb targets in Iraq and Syria, but also because of the various diplomatic nuances elucidated for this US-UAE relationship. For instance, the UAE's obvious fears about Iran, making clear to the White House its discomfort over the Iranian nuclear program and possible lifting of sanctions. They've also prepared their soldiers for a possible confrontation with Iran by churning out some 1,200 UAE veterans in the War in Afghanistan (since they joined coalition troops in 2003, pulling the last of them out this year). They also have an obvious interest in opposing Iran's allies such as Bashir al-Assad in Syria, but recognize the danger of Sunni Islamist militants like those in the Islamic State. The UAE argues that it is the closest partner and ally the US has in the Arab world, even more so than Saudi Arabia.

Another little fact: the Al-Dhafra Air Base in the UAE is the only air base in the world that hosts US F-22 Raptors outside of US soil.

To be honest, I would rather we make nice with Iran so long as we can guarantee the curbing of their nuclear program. Yet if and when ISIS is defeated, Iran and its Sunni neighbors like the UAE will cease to find a common cause. I'm pretty sure the diplomatic overtures made by the US to Iran as of late have worried every Sunni Arab nation that considers itself a friend of the US.

UAE is just the vanguard of Saudi.

While the UAE may have some things in common with Sparta, such as a large slave population, calling it little Sparta is very inaccurate. For example its many times as large as Sparta, and its military is not really renown.

I think this title is almost akin to calling your dog "Fighto" and other such names. It's certainly not to be taken literally or with exhaustive comparisons to the real ancient city-state of Sparta.

As for the UAE being the vanguard of Saudi Arabia, that is largely true, although the emirates are trying to strike their own paths in many ways. They don't exactly want to be ruled from Riyadh.

The only thing the UAE and Sparta have in common is the large slave populations that form the backbone of their economies, and the low percentage of citizens.

The one thing that sticks in my mind from the time I spent in Dubai (and later Fujairah) was just how many third world slave... sorry, foreign labourers there are in UAE, what utterly conditions they work under, ridiculously expensive cars being driven with reckless abandon, the number of Russian prostitutes plying their trade... and how few actual Arabs you see there.

    Very strange and surreal place.

From what I gather, this is a far more serious problem for Dubai, or at least it will be in the foreseeable future when poor conditions for these people cause the situation to boil over into a full blown riot.

I lived in Dubai for three years. There was nothing more sad than seeing those workers eyes looking back at you in their un air conditioned buses after working all day in the hot sun! It was as bad as seeing the abject poverty in Africa. You are also not kidding about the driving..... they drive fast everywhere. I don't know what is worse, Arabic drivers speeding or the just stupid driving of the Chinese. My girlfriend is working towards getting her drivers license which takes over a month to complete, but you wouldn't know it watching them drive. But anyway,...

Dubai is surreal... Subcontinent work as day laborers, Filipinos work in the restaurants, other Arabic and foreigners work in middle and upper management. Dubai a city were you can drink like a fish and pick up on prostitutes in the open, but don't be touchy feeler in public or eat in the open during Ramadan.

This is not likely. The locals love their Sheik. The poor workers are far too intimidated to say anything. My ex-wife use to organized trips for the students to bring them food. I never went to the camps, but the students tell me the conditions are bad.

BTW, Dubai wouldn't want the sanctions to be lifted since they make a fortune re- exporting US products to Iran.

UAE officials privately grumble that the rules of engagement set by the White House, aimed at limiting civilian casualties, have prevented them from attacking Islamic State convoys.
That non-Muslim US commanders have more concern for limiting Muslim civilian casualties than the supposedly Muslim potentates of those charming Emirates says all one needs to know about said Emirs.

Bunch of oil soaked, slave owning tyrants and pimps.

Sparta had an army that kept it`s slave population under control.

The UAE has litteraly thousands of foreign merceneries from companies like Blackwater and others in it`s country to keep control of it`s slave population.

If anything in the ancient world, it is more like Carthage.
