Default Roma delenda est - Tunisia strikes back!

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article...436948,00.html

THE SPECTRE of a nuclear race in the Middle East was raised yesterday when six Arab states announced that they were embarking on programmes to master atomic technology.

The move, which follows the failure by the West to curb Iran’s controversial nuclear programme, could see a rapid spread of nuclear reactors in one of the world’s most unstable regions, stretching from the Gulf to the Levant and into North Africa.

The countries involved were named by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Saudi Arabia. Tunisia and the UAE have also shown interest.

Why Tunisia would want it can only be one reason and one reason alone - they want to avenge the third Punic war.

Good for the Arabs for finally behaving like they are somewhat independent nations.

yes, nuclear 'power' in some of the worlds most unstable nations (unstable in more than one way) is a GREAT thing!

once again UN inaction has left the door a little open, which the middle east are now kicking down completely..

Good for them, they can join the other suicidal and mnical power-crazed countries hording their WMDs for a war that would destroy the world. Well good for them, maybe before humanity is wiped out they can have the pleasure of watching the cities of their opponents fried and glassed. This, the vindictive and spiteful attitude of the world's most powerful countries, can only spurn distrust and anxiety.

    Hehehe, that must be it!

All want to build civilian nuclear energy programmes, as they are permitted to under international law. But the sudden rush to nuclear power has raised suspicions that the real intention is to acquire nuclear technology which could be used for the first Arab atomic bomb.
    So it's all just suspicion.
Funny how everybody can build nuclear reactors and nobody cares, but when Arabs do it they are immediately accused of wanting nuclear weapons. :hmmm:

Egypt and other North African states can argue with some justification that they need cheap, safe energy for their expanding economies and growing populations at a time of high oil prices.

The case will be much harder for Saudi Arabia, which sits on the world’s largest oil reserves.
Except oil is used to power vehicles.
Nuclear power is used to generate electricity.

Oil is far too expensive to burn in electricity plants (most countries use coal or natural gas to generate electricity)

But I can see why Saudi Arabia wants a nuclear weapon:
Once Iran has one they will be on top of America's list of "oil rich countries we must *ahum* liberate"

Considering that none of those nations have expressed any kind of vested interest to see Israel wiped off the map, and happen to be the more moderate Middle Eastern countries, I really don't see what the fuss is about. Oh, that's right, people trying to make a big deal about nothing.

Egypt once tried to wipe Israel off the map, Israel fought back so hard it conquered Sinai. I can imagine that Egypt is not one of those countries that can be listed as Israels friend...

Wow, Bush really ****ed up. Thanks to his incompetency the 50 year old status quo on possession of Nuclear Arms is in shambles. Post-communist period should have been one of disarmmament, but US' international aggression leaves many countries feeling unsafe in this unipolar system.

What idiot starts to call countries axis of evil when he is not at war with them? Well, these nuclear weapons will make sure that US will not be at war with them.

Yet Egypt has been one of the few Muslim nations to begin to recognize the state of Israel and even sign a peace treaty that to my knowledge has still not been broken.

Also, I don't believe we'll ever invade Saudi Arabia. The only way that could work is if we had a muslim nation which was an ally of ours be the one to enter Mecca and Medina.

    No, it won't be.
Considering the Saudi monarchy have been American friends for generations, and that the US has no desire to liberate anyone for the sake of itself and oil imports from Saudi Arabia are stable, I'd say they have no real reason for it.
Or it could be that they're finally starting to worry about what they're going to do when oil runs out.
