The closest of the independent, unconquered Umbrian tribes was upriver from the Tiber, laying between that river and the river Nera.
The Romans called this region "Nahartium" and the local Umbrians as the "Nahars Umbri".
Fortunately, the local 'chieftain' (for lack of a better Roman understanding), Kluvis Numisis, is one of the two "Uhturs" of all or most of the Umbrii.
The Uhturs are comparable to Consuls, but less powerful in their own setting and more of a religious nature.

The Senate of Roma has sent Gaius Asinius Naso, an ex-consul and war-hero, to treat with this closest tribe on matters of relations and trade.
The tribe will speak for most of (if not all) the Umbrians.

Gaius Asinius Naso arrived to the lands of the Umbrians after a short trip with a small retinue, all riding horses.

He then asked to see the leader of the tribe in order to speak of matters of friendship and trade

Naso is shown into a small villa-like building where Kluvis Numisis was.
A large hillfort could be seen in the distance - that must have been Nahartium.

"Greetings Senator of Rome, welcome to our part of the Tiber."

"Ave Kluvis Numisis, you may call me Naso."

The senator bowed his head

"I must say your residence is very pretty as well as your lands. I myself have mever been to Nahartium, but what I've heard from associates that have is nothing but good words about it."

The Uhtur sat down and gestured for Naso to do so as well.

"What do you bring from Rome for us?"

[Pinkerton]

"Yes, but of course, Naso."

The Uhtur sat down and gestured for Naso to do so as well.

Naso sat as the man requested

"The conscript fathers of the Senate seek to open commercial ties with the Umbrii. They consider the goods from Umbrae to be of the highest quality and are very interested in trading."

"Ah, so the wolf desires a treaty of trade rights.
Have you heard of the Etruscans, Naso? We both hate them, no?"

[Pinkerton]

"Indeed. Although already twelve years have passed since we last war against them."

Naso was a young soldier when the war broke out. It was fought against the Tarquinii, the Falerii and the city of Caere. It had been his first military experience

Kluvis paused.
"All of Umbria would profit and enjoy a defensive agreement with the Roman Republic against the Leagues of Etruria."

[Pinkerton]

"I'll bring the proposition to the Senate, Kluvis, if that is what you want, but I can't guarantee anything. Rome's manpower has been severely reduced due to the war with the Samnites."

Naso himself wasn't sure of the benefits of the agreement

"Shall your people give trade rights to mine, Uhtur? Or will you take that decision when I bring the answer of your proposal?"

"We will open a trade treaty with Rome, it costs us nothing to trade along the Tiber. The Sabine tribes to the southeast are peaceful."
Kluvis cocked his head slightly.
"Yes, bring this proposition to your republic. The southern Umbrii desire a defensive alliance with Rome against the Etruscans.
I warn you Senator - if we are declined the offer, we will be very disappointed."

[Pinkerton]

Kluvis cocked his head slightly.
"Yes, bring this proposition to your republic. The southern Umbrii desire a defensive alliance with Rome against the Etruscans.

Naso nods

"I shall let them know. Now, if you allow me, I'd like to return to Roma as soon as possible."

Numisis nods.
"Till next we meet, Senator Naso."

Naso bids Kluvis Numisis farewell and leaves for Rome
