Okay, so in a recent twitter post, Nintendo showed this:
Link on a Motorcycle colored to look like the Master Sword while being shaped somewhat like a horse. Nintendo had this to say:
"The Master Cycle is part of the first DLC pack for Mario Kart 8 and has plenty of horse power." Nice wordplay Nintendo, but this brings up an important issue; pay-to-play DLC. When Treyarch (Call of Duty people) or RockStar (GTA people) or maybe even Bungie/343i (Halo people) release pay-to-play DLC they're shunned for it, but when Nintendo does it, they're almost universally praised? I'm starting to see what Neph, among other people, meant when they said that people put Nintendo on too high of a pedestal, that "Anything another game company can do we can do better, sooner or later we'll be better than you." Okay, sorry with quoting showtunes, but that was just too good a chance to pass up.
What I'm trying to say is, why is it that when a company like Treyarch, Rockstar, or 343i release pay-to-play DLC people get mad, but when Nintendo does it they get almost nothing but praise? Sure, this isn't anywhere near as bad as CoD releasing DLC on the first day the game is out instead of just including those maps/guns/whatever, but why make us pay for it? Yes, the combined price of all the confirmed DLC for MK8 is only around $19, and that's a lot cheaper than getting all the DLC for a CoD game. A valid counter-argument however would be that this DLC probably hasn't been in production since before the game was even launched and that big stuff like this shouldn't be free since it took a lot of work to model new characters, (as far as I know, Link is so far the only NEW character that isn't a recolor) come up with unique and fun ideas for tracks, come up with music for said tracks, etc etc.
What do you guys think? I encourage friendly debate in the comments, emphasis on friendly.
