Septon Barth, the first of four Hands to serve King Jaehaerys the Old. Ser Ryam Redwyne, who served as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard during the reign of the Old King, was Barth's successor. Ser Criston Cole, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, who served as Hand of the King during the reign of King Aegon II. Beyond them there is Lord Lyonel Strong during the reign of Viserys I and Ser Otto Hightower during the reign of Viserys I and Aegon II. There have been many Hands who are not Lord Paramounts that have served at this post, Your Grace.

"What to do, what to do, Tyrell, Arryn. or Martell. I cannot make this decision. perhaps it would just be best to legitimize my bastard and make him the heir. He is a competent lad despite his heritage. And with him, I will not be bound to anyone."

While you are within your right to do that, Your Grace, would the realm truly accept your bastard as your legitimate heir when the crown is passed to him? To gain an advantageous marriage from either of the three would grant you additional military and political resources. I feel that Tyrell would be the best of the three due to the military power with Arryn second and Martell following up, due to their distance from the Iron Throne.

What will they think when I marry someone so much younger than I am as a desperate attempt to solidify my rule. The King nodded. "I think would be the best way to secure my throne Lord Baratheon. Even if I were to marry Prince Arryn's sister and give myself a legitimate heir, I would still have my bastard around to cause problems and a young child who would be vulnerable to my enemies. Legitimizing my bastard son will remove both of those dangers and ensure that my line can continue."
