Default Duskendale, seat of House Darklyn

    Description

A large harbor town on the coast of the Blackwater Bay, Duskendale was once the seat of the Darklyn Kings prior to the conquest of the city by the Stormlands. A rocky headland to the south of the town protects the harbor from the storms of the Narrow Sea, and fishing villages dot the countryside outside of Duskendale, some along a road near the coastline. Some fog covered forests remain in portions of the province as well, mixed in between the limestone hills and plains.

Overlooking Duskendale is the Dun Fort, the seat of House Darklyn. A large square keep with drum towers, and rumored to have a network of catacombs under it including the crypts of the ancient Darklyn Kings.

A company of riders arrive. Red and gold banners with roaring lions. Lord Tybolt's cousin, Ser Solareon Lannister requests an audience with her Ladyship, Lady Elizabel Darklyn.

The Lannister company are allowed into the city through one of the southern gates closest to the Dun Fort, with the fort a few minutes ride from the gate through one of the dilapidated squares of the city that signs of reconstruction are beginning to appear in. Greeted by two guards who take their horses into the stables, the riders would be led by a third to the great hall of the fort. The great hall is decorated predominately with gold, sable, and argent coloration for the decorations, several tables made from oak or birch spread about before a weirdwood table that shows some age, potentially being from the time when the Darklyns were kings. Several banners and pieces of artwork are around on the edges of the room, with three banners above the dias with the Darklyn Kings' throne on it, two being the standard coat of arms of Duskendale while the middle one is a modified version with a sable seahorse instead of the shields.

Elizabel, sitting in the throne had just dismissed several masons hired for a building project to begin their work before Solareon and his escort would be led to her. "Welcome to Duskendale, Ser Lannister."

"Thanks for granting me an audience, Lady Elizabel"

Ser Solareon could be considered handsome, but his manners were somewhat effeminate, for example how his hand rested on his sword's grip. He wore make-up to conceal the deep scars left by the sickness. Still he had golden hair and green eyes, like a Lion should. His guards were clad in mail, with red and gold tabards embroidered with a roaring lion, their head covered by half-helms, with Lion's heads as crests. Solareon wore a similar attire, but more fanciful and elegant.

"We come here on behalf of Lord Tybolt Lannister, to request trade between Casterly Rock and Duskendale"

Elizabel nods, then thinks on the offer for a few minutes. Around the court, in contrast to the Lannister guards, the Darklyn ones who are mostly the remaining knights of Duskendale who survived the Spring Sickness were clad in half-plate or full plate with a variety of helms, but the predominant two types being aventail and sallet. Elizabel adjusts her glasses for a moment before speaking. "I gladly accept Lord Tybolt's offer of trade between Duskendale and Casterly Rock."

Solareon nods and claps, two guards bring forth a chest:

"A present from Lord Tybolt, to celebrate this agreement"

Inside the chest laid on a velvet cushion a magnificent goblet, made of gold engraved with the arms of Lady Darklyn and dancing dragons, a splendid present inlaid with pearls and garnets. Commissioned in the famed workshops of Lannisport.

A pair of servants come and take the chest. "It's beautiful. Tell Lord Tybolt thank you..and.." she gestures to another servant who brings forth a smaller chest bearing several of the highest quality perfumes made in Duskendale and some imported from Essos during the period before the sickness. "take this as my present to him."

Ser Solareon eyes showed malice and greed, his long and delicate fingers touched the flasks. Indeed, those scents would be great to perfume his hair, his sheets, and as presents for his lovers, like Robb Banefort, who was as greedy as a common whore. He retired his hand and gestured towards the guards who carry the chest away.

"We thank you for your kindness, Lady Darklyn, soon will the harbor of Duskendale receive the visit of the great cogs of Lannisport"

    He bows.

"You Ladyship we wish you the seven blessings"

"I wish you and your house the same, ser...and a safe trip back to the Rock." The two servants with the chest bearing the goblet finally get it out of the room, having to maneuver around two of the tables with it.

A infant wrapped in a cloth is brought before Lady Darklyn by her son. The infant stares up at her with blue eyes and makes some sound. "What is her name, Gareth?" "Vanille." Elizabel sighs and returns to her desk in the Dun Fort's solar, overlooking Duskendale. "This complicates things." Gareth orders a servant to remove his infant daughter from the solar back to his quarters. "I could always marry her mother, who is of the minor nobility here in Duskendale, whose father is a landed knight of a small town to the south of here.." "But that marriage would not bring any benefit to House Darklyn." "Here we go again." he sighs. "Mother, the time when we had any influence is gone, and you have three over children.." "You are heir to Duskendale..my heir should have a suitable marriage befitting his status.." "Marrying a vassal would improve ties with them, and finding a suitable bride after the plague may be near impossible." Elizabel sighs and turns to look at Duskendale, her son walking to be next to her. "We shall discuss this further after my search to find my children suitable marriages..""Yes, mother." "I'll make sure to refuse any bride you present so Bethany and I may be together..". Gareth then bows and leaves his mother's solar, who returns to writing notes on a map of Duskendale..

A raven arrives at Duskendale with a letter from the King.

    Lady Eliabel,

I request that you call up your banners. We will soon be at war and I want my realm ready for battle.

    Signed,

King Haegon Blacfyre, First of His Name, King of the Andals, Rhoynar, and First Men.

The maester arrives with the letter from Haegon. Elizabel reads it, then crumples it up in anger, then sighing. "Well, this changes everything.." She looks down at the map of the Crownlands, figures assembled on the border of Stokeworth and the Rosby's lands, with three lesser figures representing Rosby, Hayford, and Hogg. Elizabel quickly pens several ravens requesting her vassals to raise their banners at the order of the king, then goes back to staring at the map..

The appearance of a host of over ten thousand approaching the walls of Duskendale being sighted by a Sablecloak watchman in a wooden tower that is serving as a placeholder for the stone towers to be added to the wall later this year raises the alarm, the four-hundred or so soldiers left by Darklyn rushing to the walls along with the 1,700 strong watch of Duskendale and the levies, under the command of Ser Darke. As the host grows closer, the banners flying above the army are a relief to those on the walls. "Open the gates."

Several Darklyn retainers take the wounded Gareth to the Dun Fort for healing, while Ser Darke meets with the Lord Marshal and Lady of Duskendale. "My lady.." "If you are going to inquire how the battle went, we lost several thousand, but less than the Lannisters and were able to alert the King of their action. My other son is either captured or dead, or perhaps dead due to being executed by Lannister or Targaryen." She turns to Darkwood. "Your father would've been proud to hear of your action in the battle, ser." The large man bows slightly. "Thank you, my lady." "Unfortunate. So the capital.." "Is likely besieged. Or Rosby is if they pursued us, escaping and re-organizing the army was a greater priority than gathering further information." The man nods. "Your orders, my lady?" "You shall continue to defend Duskendale with the City Watch and the garrison. Once my son recovers or his condition is stable, Ser Cortnay and I shall lead the army south to aid his grace's army if it has not arrived already." The larger man nods and excuses himself to oversee the establishment of a encampment for the soldiers that wouldn't be able to fit into Duskendale in some fashion. Elizabel and Darke begin walking back to the Dun Fort. "Did my relatives distinguish themselves?" "Yes. But unfortunately Lord Buckwell was slain by an arrow, and Lord Manning died as well, but I do not know how." Darke nods, and the rest of their walk back to the capital is spent discussing the defense of Duskendale, should the Lannisters or someone else attempt to seize the city.

"We don't gold, Lady Darklyn, gold is what we don't need right now"

He shouts to the walls with clear voice. He was Ser Solareon Lannister.

"Your son has been treated accordingly his status and his a guest in our camp. We want to offer your ladyship what my Lord did in the battlefield. Your son will be freed and married to Lady Kenning. All we want is your support Lady Darklyn, as head of the Crownlands and main vassal to the crown. Haegon is not the noble Daemon, but a twisted and ruthless man, who cares little for his vassals. If you don't want Maekar in the throne at least don't support Haegon, for the realm's sake. The gold of the West will flow again to your chest, as it has been for many years now and you'll place a better King on the throne"

ooc : They're not on the walls, the meeting is outside, near the encampment around the walls.

Darklyn and Darkwood ride back to Duskendale. After they are through the encampment, Cortnay turns to Lady Darklyn."We could've taken him as a hostage, use him to negotiate.." "He came here as an emissary...and even if we did that, I presume Lannister would kill my son when word of us taking his emissary hostage reached him..."

A group of knights and courtiers arrive at Duskendale, carrying the banners of House Reyne. They ride right through the town up to the central keep. There Lord Reyne requests a private audience with Lady Darklyn.
