Default guard mode and unit cohesion

    Just some feedback...

Guard mode doesn't seem to work in EB2. Instead of maintaining formation units push forward and lose cohesion. Eventually, if the battle continues long enough, everything become a mess of soldiers hacking at each other from all sides. Sorry if this is already on the agenda. Guard mode was so useful in EB1, I would hate to see it go to waste in EB2.

This only happens with overhanded spear units. If you tried units with swords or underhand spears they will hold their lines when guard mode.

Have a look on this submod:http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...peed-EDU-fixes, over handed units may still push forward when attacked though but it's much less than before.

Thanks. I have already checked and made sure that all my spear units have the light_spear attribute. It doesn't help much. Everything still becomes a muddle.

I use guard mode on light spearmen with high armour values in the centre but I don't order them to attack single units; I move them towards the battlezone as if they were macedonian phalanxes. I can't say I'm overly thrilled with how this tactic works (the main problem imo is either their low lethality, their attack animation or something along these lines), but, I think, they do keep their formation.

A propos cohesion, the most frustrating experience when it comes to combat is (still) trying to attack with cavalry, especially when you want to attack other cavalry; in my experience, it's been terribly rare when ALL the soldiers of a cav. unit engage in combat when I order them, and sometimes, when they kind of do, they tend to spread all over the battlefield. I amnot sure, but I think the problem is aggravated when it comes to units with loose spacing.

I've been talking to Ibrahim about cavalry spacing over on The Org, he's of the view Roman and Hellenistic cavalry in particular need tighter formations, and cavalry are in general too loosely spaced.

As to the main topic, which units are you observing this with? Are you playing 2.0 or 2.01? I ask the second question because in 2.0 most spear-using units had the spear attribute, which is atrocious for holding formation. In 2.01 all the primary spear-users had this changed to light_spear, but the secondary spear-users (mostly those with precursor javelins) were forgotten. The submod Garensterz recommended, amongst other things, gives light_spear to all those secondary spear-users. I've already noticed this makes them hold formation better, and means they don't get beaten in melee by knife-wielding skirmishers.
