Licinius' domus was a rather simple abode; stuccoed brick supported by awnings of wood structures that betrayed both a man of means, and yet humble beginnings. Lucius Valerius Poplicola was met by Lucius' mother, Caecilia Licinia Varus, who had been staying with her son after the passing of her husband, Quintus Licinius Varus, some five years prior.
"Greetings, Senator, I will summon my son to meet you. While you wait, some wine?"

Without waiting for a response, she made a motion to Licinia Varus to pour a glass of wine from their finest stock. With a genial smile, Caecilia turned to the visitor.

"Please, wait here. My son will be with you shortly."

Lucius Licinius Varus had been studying his father's latin texts; Quintus Licinius Varus was amongst the first among his family to reach the status of Senator, and had come into some wealth; thus, he sought to cement this by commissioning a biography and collecting a small library of texts. However, much of the texts were lost with the Senone's sack of Rome in 387 B.C., thus every piece of literature that antedated that period was considered to be quite precious. Lucius considered this particular piece exceptionally valuable, as it detailed the family history back to the dawn of the Republic and the overthrow of the Roman Kings.

With a quiet knock Caecilia appeared and informed him of the guest's presence.

"Senator Valerius. How good of you to drop by. I am sorry for the wait. What business do you have for me to discuss"

As he spoke, both Caecilia and Licinia left the room, as it was against Roman custom for women to be in the presence of male guests when not invited.

Lucius accepts the wine. "Thank you domina."

He waits until Varus enters. "Greetings Lucius, I thought we could enjoy a quiet chat about the upcoming nominations."

"Indeed, what do you wish to discuss? I had planned to run for a higher office, though I am not sure as to which one. It would seem that the Plebeians are unfortunately under represented, and that many of those in high office have shown little concern for the Res Publica other than for their own reputation."

"Yes, we are quite under-represented in the higher offices, which is why we pushed so hard at the start of the year to get Senator Varus into the office of praetor. We won that small battle even if by compromise of Senator Naso. But we will need more to run for praetor and Consul next year. Not putting a candidate up for either position last year, hurt us."

    Valerius replies.

"Excellent. Who do you propose that we nominate for these positions?"

OOC: My class starts in 10 minutes, so I'm going to be a bit indisposed for the hour.

"I will probably run for Quaestor next year. I was thinking of Naso for Consul, you could probably run for Praetor to get your hand wet as they say. But what is your preference?"

"Perhaps, though I was also thinking of Quaestor. Regardless, given the tumultuous nature of our Republic and the disaster that has befallen the Roman army against the Samnites, I feel that it is my duty to help lead our country.

"As long as we get behind one Plebeian Consul, I believe we can get him elected." Valerius sipped more wine, it was good. "There were plebeians helping in leading the army, who knows what rolls they played. That could come back to hurt us if they failed in their duty."
