    Default CRT monitor changing colour

Over the past few days my monitor has been flickering and changing colour (grey, blue, red, etc. very pale variants of those). This as I'm sure you can imagine is very irritating for me. Degaussing it temporarily fixes the problem but I honestly don't know what else to do.

Images are also appearing darker now.

    Well...maybe it's dying...
You could try setting it's refresh rate lower or higher (I suggest lower) and seeing if that helps.

CRT monitors have a finite life span.
From your description the prognosis is that your screen is terminal.
Start saving up now for a replacement LCD monitor. :hmmm:

They don't last forever, but they last longer than LCD's.

It could be a tuning problem.
CRT screens can be very sensitive to an improper tuning.
I've heard that even the difference in the earths magnetic field between Europe and Australia can distort the image.
It might pay off to bring the screen to an expert to get it re-tuned/repaired (don't open it and screw around with it yourself)
But if it's an old screen, or if you need an expensive repair it's probably best to just buy a new screen.

It's at 85hz, which I believe is the norm these days.

The VGA cable could be going, I have seen monitors turn cyan magenta or yellow on me when the cables are bent in a funny way. But otherwise Id get a new monitor, they fairly cheap nowadays
