Default Freddie’s guide to overclocking your mouse

Turn your mouse from a salad dodger to Premiership player titan.

    1) The first task is to find out how fast you optical mouse currently is. Use the Mouse Rate Checker (which you will need to download) found at http://tscherwitschke.de/download.html . When you run it you should be getting a result between 100Mhz and 260Mhz, hopefully we can increase this.

    2) Next job is to download and install USB Mouserate Switcher found at Softpeida . Now reboot into Windows Safe mode and log in as the administrator rather then a limited user account. Once your in run the app then click Patch to begin the black magic.

    3) The software should give you three overclocks to windows default of the 125Mhz/8ms USB polling rate. The first 250Mhz/4ms is a safe overclock but as mentioned before isn’t that great. The 500Mhz option should suit most users while the 1000Mhz is unstable and isn’t much use to anyone, so 500 Mhz is your best bet.

    4) This step is important so read carefully! Unplug all your USB devices EXCEPT the mouse and reboot back into XP. Load up Mouserate and you should find you mouse is now a lot more responsive. Now plug back all your USB devices one by one testing each one still works, If it doesn’t repeat step 3 but pick 125Mhz.

I can't imporve your ping rate but the extra speed should give you better response and better snipping in results Counter strike Unreal et al.

Well I hope this helps, keep checking out the basement for more of my guides coming your way in the near furture.

Good evening gentlemen. Ever heard of a saying “the best things in life are free”? My advice is free and I don’t expect to be mocked in this fashion. Overclocking your standard mouse means you can potentially turn one of these into one of these. Ultra sharp response times means shorter delays for gamers and a smoother operation in every day usage.

Fair enough it's not everyday you hear things like "Hi, this is your sister Dave", or "Try Burger Kings new shark burger" or "Overclock your mouse" which falls into the same category - it sounds preposterous and futile when in fact it’s easy, real and useful. If anything the title is misleading since I'm acutely overocloking the polling rate of the USB ports not he mouse itself.

After having fully read this, wouldnt simply making the mouse more sensitive do the trick as well?

Ok since some of you haven't grasped the positives of overclocking ones mouse (despite my best efforts) I'm going to write about DirectX 10 and what it means to the gaming industry. I'll also go into detail about the effects it might have on the console market. I also have a review to do (Company of Heroes) and a UK section on the PC buyers guide sticky thread (not hard just but a pain in the back) as well as starting a new section for monitors.

    Nice guide Freddie.

And yes, you can overclock your mouse, a lot of people has done it (just google "overclock mouse"). It does seem to make a difference in responsiveness according to some people.

Well, if you want to do some crazy stuff on photoshop, get a graphics tablet. Although I think they are only around 50Mhz, they have pressure and angle sensitivity.
