Beginnings Rome - 343 BC

Rome has just survived 50 years of various assaults and invasion from the Gauls to the north, and even now the Senone tribe still occupies Picenum. Luckily other Italian tribes have suffered equally during this time and Rome may have a chance for respite finally. They also are the leaders of the Latin League, made up mostly of the Latin tribes along the coast south of Ostia. But tribal wars are common and Rome has almost continually been involved in some conflict since the Republic was founded. Even now there are rumors that the Samnites are preparing to come down from their mountainous strongholds to conquer coastal cities.

Internally, the political atmosphere has calmed down from the turbulent times of the military tribunes over 25 years ago. Plebeians can now hold all the political offices, however, they are still barred from holding priesthood or augorships. The plebiscites also do not govern the law for all Roman citizens. So the plebeians still are not on equal footing to the patricians. Most of the public Roman buildings are also not in the best condition, as the constant warring has not allowed the city to develop its resources to their fullest possibilities.

However, the plebeians are not restricted with the limits that Patricians have and are much freer to expand their wealth through mining and trade. An enterprising plebeian could become extremely wealthy if he plays his cards correctly. Patricians however, have access to more land for farming and will play an integral part in the food source of the growing power that is Rome.

That is how Rome stands. Now will you take control of a Patrician senator, and his blood lines that go back to the days of the kings, or a plebeian upstart who will force his way to the top of Rome's political elite? Use marriage ties, bribes, blackmail or even assassination to work your way to the top. All while leading your faction to power, through your gravitas, so that even the slightest nod of your head will move men to your bidding!
