    Default Struggling with Empire Maintenance

Well basically like the title says, Empire Maintenance has killed my Octavian campaign.

So far I've conquered Sicily, Corsica and all of Hispania, and now I'm screwed basically. My Empire Maintenance is over 90% and I'm not even close to the highest Imperium level, which adds 20% and 30% respectively. Now, after doing some simple maths, even WITH all of the technologies that reduce maintenance, and WITH every general having the trait maxed out that reduces maintenance, I would still be sitting well over 100% when my Imperium gets bigger.

So what the hell gives? Something is bugged, because basically i'm forced to ABANDON territories now, because they kill my income, no matter what. Really counter intuitive. The object of the game is to conquer more territories, yet, the game punishes you egregiously when you do, making it literally impossible by my reckoning to even play this campaign.

Recruit governors and admirals. they help a lot with the right traits, im on turn 300 in my octavian campaign and have conquered all of the roman empire except for Syria and Judea which belong to the parthians (the kicked antony´s ass) and the only trade partner i have is the Marcomanni whom i beat into submission. My income: 25000 maintaining 14 full armies and two navies, how did i do this? well, lets just say looting has huge benefits.

I have max governors, always do. I have them in my richest provinces doing their passive ability thing.

Not sure what admirals would do for me, other than another 1 or 2 % off the maintenance. What % is your Empire Maintenance? Because mine is sitting at 91% right now, literally eating 91% of my tax income, crippling my economy. I'm making 10k+ a turn in trade, but that is barely keeping me afloat. I've done nothing but expand and conquer with no more than 4 legions and 2 fleets. Honestly, I'm really frustrated. What the hell else am I supposed to do?

Loot until you can hear the screams of women and children. Seriously, dont why but when you loot you get a respectable amount of money, however thats not the important part, after you take and loot the city your income will grow (dont know why, make sure to take out the armies the city after you loot it). I told you to recuit admirals and leave them attached to the ports because when they level up you can choose the bureaucrat route which boosts research and empire maintenance. Finally my empire maintenace is at 150.8, quite high if you ask me but i make it up by setting taxes on maximum, to do this without too many penalties you should investigate philosophy technologies that give happiness

I may have to adjust some of our corruption settings given the new imperium effects. Either that or wait until we have customized the imperium effects.

Thanks for the response man, hopefully some small adjustments will settle the issue, because they definitely seem a little bit high.

Either way, its a great mod man, keep up the good work.

First off, I love love your mod.

But the empire maintenance is killing me. At 140% my taxes are negative and I can't make war on anyone since it'll kill my trade. Haalp!

I research level 3 cities and Tax early.
building priority is always upgrade cities+ harbors and everything else is food production, my dignitaries at max from the very the start and I keep them alive with 24 tpy, taking slaves after each battle makes my really rich( my generals bonus slave and looting;commander of men).
Never had any economic problem ... hope this helps

Empire maintenance is ridiculously out of control. The technologies %s that reduce it need to be doubled AT LEAST. I'm playing as Rome and all I have is Italy, Greece/Thracia and Carthage province and I'm at 95% empire maintenance with all the techs researched. Barely making 1k a turn.
    You look great today.

Nice to see world domination is impossible

Empire maintenance is seen in faction overview and also settlement details.

Maybe a stupid question, but can someone point me to the file in which the empire maintenance values are defined? Or tell me what "empire maintenance" is actually called in the db files? Can't seem to find it.

    Thanks.

Really? I thought I figured it out. It seems like it is called "rom_tech_module_civil_philosophy", at least in the "technology_effects_junction" table and in the "effect_bundles_to_effect_junctions" table (where imperium effects are defined).

It does seem to be called corruption when dealing with agent skills, however. This is kinda confusing, as corruption was already a concept in the game before the concept of empire maintenance was added.

Does anyone know exactly what factors can affect empire maintenance other than imperium level, tech, and agents? There are definitely other factors that affect it, but I can't figure out what they are. (Many big empires have empire maintenance of ~50% at the start of the game, when Imperium/Fame only accounts for 10-15%, there's no tech impact, and there's little or no agent impact.)

    Thanks.

Reading the DEI patch notes when updating versions is helpful.

    Empire maintenance is corruption
They are one and the same.
DEI simply renamed Corruption into Empire maintenance for immersions sake.

Therefore everything that affected corruption before effects Empire maintenance.
The more territories you hold (regardless of imperium level or effects) increases your Empire maintenance. I'm also fairly sure something in DEI increases it even further to try to make the late game economy more of a challenge (not 100% on this part however)

This game is now called Rome II: Total Corruption. Sorry guys but maintenance over 100 percent is ridiculous. Maybe someone can make a temporary fix locked maxed corruption at 90 percent so conquering new lands still make a sense?

Me either... the maintenance is 121.5% in my campaign.... nearly all of the income from the city is 0. I earn money by the trade...
I rule 17 provinces but their net income is about 3500.

I just finished a Rome campaign on hard. Empire maintance was an issue for me mid game but I liked it. It held me back from getting more then 7 legions. Late game as it bigger I didnt notice it once I had my goveners leveled. I was getting 30 000 per and had 12 or 14 legions. 2 were merc armies.

Maybe you need to look at your provinces and how there set up. I have 1 recruitment center then food and eco are 50 50.

So there are still ways to gain infinite money even with empire maintenance

Try with more spread out military provinces and it will be both harder to win battles (less stacked bonus) and harder to maintain a good economy (less average income per province). Thats if you want to specifically gimp yourself and have a bigger challenge if you're feeling there is not enough.

In both cases (complaining that its too hard, or too easy) there are ways to tweak your game experience (I'm not speaking to anyone specifically here), the empire maintenance system is a static system that doesnt fit into each and everyone gameplay. But I think its working way better than the old corruption one.

Yea, over 100% is just not productive.

It should follow a kind of logarithm function where 100% corruption is not possible to achieve, but the 90-99 range could in the world domination end game phase.
Even 1% of income at that stage would mean a few thousands denarii.
