Well, never had that happen before.
The heir to the throne, Prince Ecgfrith, had two bastard sons early in my campaign. The first tragically died at only ten years old, a terrible accident involving a harp, a wooden chair, and a particularly flighty herring. Tragic.
His second son, Eormenred, learned early the meaning of mortality. He was never a brave boy, never popular among nobles, and hard to get along with.
That's what makes it odd, then, that within a year of him coming of age, he rebelled.
High King Offa had just returned from the conquest of Ireland. When he entered the palace at his capital, there were already many rumors abound about Eormenred, how he had spoken ill of Offa publicly. His anger seemed to be focused around the fact that he felt he was being deprived of his rightful succession, as, after Offa died and Ecgfrith became king, the heir would be Offa's youngest son, rather than Eormenred, because he was a bastard.
Offa sent his youngest daughter to attempt to reconcile, but Eormenred spurned the offer, demanding money for his continued good will. This, obviously, would not do. Offa refused, and Eormenred gathered over two hundred noble theigns and fled the capital, challenging the king to combat for the throne.
The High King accepted the challenge, and marched out to meet the bastard in the field with his own warband.Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

SHOW ME YOUR WAR FACE!
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Eormenred's troops are good fighters, well armed and armored. The melee is quite intense, but as it goes on, the experience and superior skill of the King's companions begin to show, as the would-be usurper's allies are driven back, slowly but surely.

High King Offa himself gets stuck in. At sixty one years old, he still proves why he is known as, "The Bear."

When Eormenred falls during the battle, his troops quickly lose heart, fleeing within minutes. They are run down with cavalry, and slaughtered to the man. A dishonorable death, for traitors and, even worse, cowards.

Mere months after the rebellion, if it could even be called that, King Offa dies in his sleep. The court declares it a natural death, and yet, some find it rather suspicious. Many considered the king a cruel tyrant, and he though he was popular with the common folk for his conquests, he was disliked by the nobility. This fact raised questions as to just how a young, cowardly bastard even found the courage, or men, to rebel against him. The King's son, Ecgfrith, and his wife, came to attend his own son's funeral, despite the body having been hung outside the castle walls, as all traitors would be. Despite not being her's, Ecgfrith's wife always cared for the boy. There were also many rumors about her. She knew the art of herbs, brewing potions and making poultices, but many suspected, not without cause, that such arts were not at all far away from creating poisons. Indeed, more than one of Ecgfrith's rivals had met similar, mysterious "natural" deaths.
It was not investigated further, however. The nobles did not wish to press their new king, and few cared enough about Offa in his life to investigate his death. And so Offa passes into the annals, and Ecgfrith's coronation proceeds without interruption. Any rumors about the new High Queen are spoken of only in whispers, in private...

Haha cool pics. Stuff like that is what these games are all about.

Funny and weird game. Accidently joined an ally's war against WRE (long after they had broken alliance and trade treaty) and now they simply won't off and die. They're holed up in Hispania and Africa and putting pressure on me (after taking advantage of the situation by taking parts of Tripolitania). I'd never think I'd see the day where the WRE would be my biggest problem in Attila.
