    Could somebody with experience please tell me how to make a really good gloss map?

    Gloss/Specular maps are some of the most under-documented types of texture maps, but a good specular map adds a level of detail and realism nothing else can provide. That said... I don't have the time to write up an article now, though maybe very soon. Generally, 'shinier' areas are 'whiter', non-specular areas are darker, and then add a healthy dose of monochromatic gaussian noise (4%) to the final image.
